Proverbs 31:15

I was lying in bed this morning feeling very reluctant about getting up, I would have loved to sleep another hour — can’t do this until Saturday.  Each weekday my clock radio goes off at 5:45am (and plays me gentle classical music) and I get out of bed by 6:15 after listening to the news.

I am not an early morning person, I do not like getting up in the morning, I get no joy from it, there is no spring in my step as I “bounce” out of bed or smile on my face.  It is harder at the moment as it is dark and cold outside which is quite depressing (in summer it is much easier).  Its not that I love my bed too much, I just need a little bit more sleep.  My doctor once told me this was the most common problem in modern society.

I leave home at 7:05am so the mornings are quite a rush with showering, deciding on what to wear, blow-drying my hair, washing the dishes, feeding the cat, making the bed and general tidy up.  I try and do things in the evening to make the mornings a little less rushed e.g. make lunches, have the cat food ready, make sure the house is tidy...

Then I thought of the verse in Proverbs 31:15 “She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.”  I am sure she did this with joy in her step, happiness on her face, with a positive attitude and didn’t grumble about waking before the rest of the house.  She also cooked a meal for her husband and family, sadly I struggle with all of this and my husband has to makes his own breakfast (my sons eat later).  The idea of getting up even earlier is just too hard to comprehend, I am already tired when I rise at 6:15, I would be worse if I rose at 5:30am.  It is difficult being a modern day Proverbs 31 woman.

How are you about getting up in the morning?  Do you know ways to increase the joy of rising, to make things easier?

  1. I often struggle with this too.... something that helps me is putting on relaxing classical music or hymns to listen to first thing. The other thing I enjoy is being able to get a few things done before I have the little ones underfoot - and making Dan a nice cup of tea and putting a smile on his face - that just seems to give me a boost LOL. He is not a morning person, so if I can make him smile, it's a good morning!!!! I love the freshness of a new day IF I can drag myself out of bed. Funnily, I do better on 6.5 - 7 hours sleep, so if I take the extra time to sleep in, I feel worse for it and the day doesn't seem that nice.
    I'm rambling, I know. Sorry! :P

  2. Brrrr.... it is cold enough up here in CQ. I would find it very hard to get up early in the southern temperatures.
I am first up here each day but everyone gets their own breakfast. Every house is different. Attitude is the main thing!

  3. Sorry, I can't give any helpful tips on that topic. I can sympathise with you about the cold temps and dark mornings making it harder to get out of bed.

Luckily my little Teddy can bring a smile to my face on even the dreariest morning. She is SUCH a happy morning person that I can't help but chuckle when she comes bouncing into my room every day to give me a big, slobbery kiss.

It still doesn't make me want to get up, but it makes me feel better about having to!

  4. If I have enough sleep, I love to get up really early. There is no feeling like it... the fresh morning air, the stillness and silence. I feel closest to the Lord on these mornings.

When I was a brand new believer, I used to get up at 4am every morning to pray. My children were very young then, so I enjoyed this time to myself with just me and the Lord. I grew to know Him very intimately during this stage of my walk, because of the sacrifice of sleep.

I must get into that again I feel. Your post is a timely reminder...

  5. I leave the house for work at about 7:35 or so, but get up at six in order to accomplish something in the morning. I'm not a morning person, but I am generally happy throughout the day if I had a nice, unrushed morning during which I was able to accomplish something - be it sewing a few seams, prepping for dinner, or even cleaning the bathrooms and doing a bit of dusting. If I don't accomplish anything, I spend my free minutes at work grumbling about how much I have to do that night, and how I wish I could accomplish more!

  6. Well, I'm a morning person....except I'm a night owl, too. :) That's not a good combination, is it? I get up early to take care of my husband before he leaves, and I'm staying up late at night spending time with my older boys. So, I do understand the being tired struggle. And, then, being 9 months pregnant adds just a bit more fatigue to the mix. But, I have the blessing of being able to nap in the middle of the day if I need to. It sounds like you are trying to be more prepared..doing things the night before is a huge help. Any possibility of getting to bed earlier? As for the joy part, pray, pray, pray. God is so faithful, as is so apparent in your posts, to meet our needs and give us wisdom.

  7. Ah dear Sister, I can empathise with you so totally! Our alarm is set for 4:55, dear wife gets up and showers first, which allows me some extra time. Crawling out of bed is soooo hard, but amazingly, by the time we hit the car at 06:45I start to feel alive. My problem is like Trisha, I find it hard to go to sleep early at night, and it seems that 5-6 hours sleep is my weekday quota, whereas Saturday is my 7 hour night, but often I don't wake up much better, and Saturday night it is even harder to sleep!! The woes of insomnia! Sleep hygeine tells us to go to bed at the same time and get up the same time each day, and aim for at least 7 hours, in theory getting up the same time should reset the clock (body), but I don't find it any easier after ten years of a 5 AM start. Soon a week of sleep ins!! LL S

  8. Oh Jo - I have struggled with this for all my working life. I have to get up at 4 am - then leave the house at 5:30 or so - to be at work a little after 6 am. I have been doing this for 33 years. I just know that if it is a work day - I have to get my butt in bed early!

  9. Find it harder in the winter than the summer.
If I had to go out to work it would probably be even harder.
Do you get to bed early enough?

  10. OH boy oh boy. I have struggled with this my whole life. I am always happy I got up early, once I am actually up and awake. It's the getting there that is hard. SO hard. I used to rise at 5 AM when I was teaching, and left the house at 6:45 or so. I don't have to do this anymore, but getting up is still really hard. And I think it depends on what you're going through. For me, the process of adjusting to a new country, and dealing with the different losses that have come simultaneously, has just knocked the starch out of me, and I'm tired a lot of the time. It is better if I get to bed earlier, but I struggle with that, too! I think I'm no good at transitions and change (should have thought about that before moving across the ocean!!!).
