Illustrator of many books, including "Wind in the Willow" by Kenneth Grahame and "The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett

We were talking yesterday about adding a children's classic to our bookclub list and wondered what to include. My friend suggested "Seven little Australians", someone else through of "Wind in the Willow", I suggested "The Secret Garden" or "Black Beauty". What would you suggest we read as part of our bookclub? We thought it would be fun to read a children's classic from a perspective of an adult.

I hope you enjoy these beautiful illustrations for these two wonderful children's classics - both loved when I was young and I am sure by many many other children. Did you enjoy these two books?

“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

  1. A very talented illustrator - lots of detail in those illustrations! Love the Wind in the Willows illustrations - we just finished listening to a Wind in the Willows audiobook - it was fun... Although, I was a little surprised by the spiritism/mythology, I forgot the book had any of that! :)
I think if I were to read over a child's classic for a book club, the one I would choose would be Blinky Bill or Paddington (the full Adventures of Paddington book). They are probably lighter classics though.

    1. And when you start to look at them, they are so full of detail. Very talented. We were only talking the other day about Wind in the Willow and other children's stories written at the time - many have strong adult themes running through them, they aren't really designed as children's books exclusively, this is certainly the case with Alice in Wonderland or "The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe". This is one of the reasons why we want to read on for bookclub, to read it as an adult rather than as a child.

  3. Lovely illustrations! We have 2 copies of the Secret Garden just because they are by 2 different illustrators. They are just as enjoyable as the books themselves. My suggestions for your book club are hands down, Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess both by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I can read them over and over. Such strong and beautiful hearts run through the main characters. You will be warmed by these timeless stories! :)

And thank you for sharing at the Art of Home-Making Mondays this week!

    1. Thankyou for your suggestion - the group went for Alice in Wonderland, but I am eager to read more children's classics in the future, so I will add these to my list.
