The fun of food photography

I love taking photos and a few years ago spent two years taking a photo every day of things that were happening around me including the food we were eating.  I found food photography fascinating as it is something we take for granted (food I mean) but it is rather beautiful when you start to look at it closely. Some foods, such as the cinnamon quill are a work of art and broccoli is as pretty as any flower.

It is fun creating art from food and I would encourage ladies who like photography to give food photography a go as it is fun to do. Whilst I don't have any of the fancy lights that professional photographers have, one can still produce a good photo from basic equipment. Many of these photos were taken using my smart phone, the closest thing I had to hand at the time. Food photography is an inexpensive hobby as we all cook and have food around us and generally everyone has a camera and computer!

The other exciting thing with food photography is creating photo journals — do you have a child who loves to cook, why not take photos of their creations (or they learn to take their own photos) and create an album to show their wonderful work but also to show their improvements. It can teaches them about presenting food on a plate and how to make meals look attractive. The pie below is one my son made and I took the photo. My son often takes photos of his meals as a way of recording the different things he has tried.  You can include the recipe in the journal making it such a useful book later in life.

And if you do take some photos that you really like, why not have them enlarged and framed and place them on your kitchen walls. For ideas on presentation, just look at cookbooks as they often have wonderful photos in them. For unusual pieces of china, visit the local thrift store and see what you can find cheap.

One blogger I follow likes to create special scenes in her house and garden to photograph. Lady Lydia from "Home Living" (http://homeliving.blogspot.com.au), recreated a lovely outdoor scene (Post) in her garden using an old bench which was very pretty and gave ideas to other ladies who like to do this sort of thing. The scene reminded me of something from a Jane Austen novel! She has such an imagination and an eye for detail.

So the next time you are looking at food, why not grab your camera and starting to take some interesting photos. Who would have thought that mixed dry beans look so good and how fascinating is a garlic bulb.

  3. Some beautiful photos - I agree there is much beauty to be seen if we stop and look. I also like that food doesn't get up and run away as children do!

    1. That is very true and food doesn't mind you moving it around or making it wait, it never complains!! and sometimes you can eat it at the end!!

    1. Thankyou :)

When you start to take photos of food you start to see how amazing it really is and how incredible God is to create these things for us to eat. It is also a reminder that whole foods are so much more beautiful than something processed!
