Childhood memories: #1

The wise words from Winnie-the-Pooh

If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you.

It is more fun to talk with someone who doesn't use long, difficult words but rather short, easy words like "What about lunch?"

You can't help respecting anybody who can spell TUESDAY, even if he doesn't spell it right; but spelling isn't everything. There are days when spelling Tuesday simply doesn't count.

Lines and Squares
A.A.Milne

Whenever I walk in a London street,
I'm ever so careful to watch my feet;
And I keep in the squares,
And the masses of bears,
Who wait at the corners all ready to eat
The sillies who tread on the lines of the street,
Go back to their lairs,
And I say to them, "Bears,
just look how I'm walking in all the squares!"

And the little bears growl to each other, "He's mine,
As soon as he's silly and steps on a line."
And some of the bigger bears try to pretend
That they came round the corner to look for a friend;
And they try to pretend that nobody cares
Whether you walk on the lines or squares.
But only the sillies believe the talk;
It's ever so portant how you walk.
And it's ever so jolly to call out, "Bears,
just watch me walking in all the squares!"

 Thanks to A.A.Milne I would try very hard never to walk on the lines in case of bears came out to eat me!!!  Occasionally I do it today.

  1. How cute is that?? I'd never read that about the lines and squares before... But when we were children we played a game about not standing on the lines... only we called them "cracks" because there's often a crack in the pavement between the squares... and the thing we used to say about it was rather rascist in hindsight... we'd say "If you step on a crack, you'll marry a black"!!!! LOL! How silly children can be - we had no idea what we were talkinga about!

  3. My children love that poem! and always play that game at the grocery store...the consequence of stepping on the lines always changes though.

    I love that there are days when spelling Tuesday doesn't count. I take life a little too seriously sometimes.

    Happy day to you.

  5. Rosemary - isn't it good that A.A.Milne just doesn't date and each generation loves his work as much as the last. He had a way with words that make his poems magical.

  6. Yay for Winnie the Pooh!! lol...

    I remember my son's first birthday... a friend and I made him a Winnie the Pooh cake. I decorated his room in all Winnie the Pooh things. I think I loved Pooh more than he did! LOL

  9. Oh I left a comment on this before...the computer must have eaten it.
    I love Pooh, we have books, videos, and stuffed animals, and pooh Christmas decoration...of course the Wilton Cake pan for birthdays. We have named each character from Pooh as one of my children.
    I miss cuddling up with my little ones in the morning to the Winnie the Pooh cartoon....they all have the song memorized.
    Now to buy grandkids one day the books!
