Art Wednesday

Each Wednesday I have presented many wonderful and priceless works of art by the worlds most famous artists.  Today, I must apologies, as it isn't one of those days, today is very frivolous and fun and the works I am going to share with you are highly unlikely to ever appear in any of the great galleries of the world or even those not so great.

But if you are a knitter you can be partake in this art form!!

I do call it art - modern sculpture to be a correct - but I must stress, this isn't my sort of art - but it is important to cover all sorts of art whether I like it or not.

So what am I talking about - the "technical" term for this type of art form is YARN BOMBING.  Yes, you heard correct. It is a form of street or graffiti art which  displays colorful works using knitting or crocheting rather than paint or chalk.  They are only meant to be temporary. According to Wikipedia the practice is believed to have originated in the U.S. with Texas knitters trying to find a creative way to use their leftover and unfinished knitting projects, but it has since spread worldwide.

You could start with something big, such as covering a bus, tank or telephone box?
This is not the point where you ask WHY. . .
Or you could work with nature and use trees as your prop
Something much smaller - leg warmers?
A scarf to keep warm
Why not a bike?

I do hope you have enjoyed these pieces of "art".
Personally I could find much better use for all that wool that is wasted.
Back to more serious art next week.

  1. I have never seen anything like it!! We live in a strange, strange world, and I tend to agree with you, Jo - there are much better uses for the yarn!

  2. Too funny! Quite cheerful too :-)
At least they'd be easy to remove and don't have obscene words sprawled everywhere!

  4. Gee what incredible work...some people have too much time on hands!

My favourite would be the bus followed closely by the tree! I am battling to finish knitting a tea cosy let alone any of these lol!

  5. Tania, from the tea cozy you can now consider something much bigger.

  6. Jo,

I've never heard of art bombing until I read your post. It's interesting, colorful, and different. However, I am at a loss as to the point of doing this, since it's "only temporary," and will need to be removed later.
