Flavoured salts
I was reading the November edition of the Australian Women's Weekly and came across a great idea "Flavoured Salts" - these would make excellent gifts or something you could make for yourself. I had to give it a go.

Rosemary and cumin salt
(to use on lamb)
Mix together
- 1 cup of sea salt flakes
- 1 tablespoon of finely chopped rosemary
- 2 teaspoons of cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon of grounded black pepper
Mix the ingredients together |
Stir over low heat for about 3 minutes or until the salt is fragrant. |
Remove from heat, cool. Store in an air tight container |
It certainly smells good and I can't wait to use this on a lamb roast as a rub. |
Lemon and chilli salt
(use on chicken)
Combine
- 1 cup of sea salt flakes
- finely chopped (thin strips) rind from 2 lemons
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
Stir over low hear for about 3 minutes until the salt is fragrant. Add 2 teaspoons of chilli flakes - combine. Cool and store in an airtight container.

The box of sea salt flakes I bought was expensive ($9.00) however it contains 2 cups so I can make both these recipes and as you don't use very much of the salt when cooking, it should last a while. Even though I haven't done the maths, this is a much cheaper option than buying them ready made.

This is a very interesting idea - I don't think I've ever heard of it before! I wonder if they are strongly flavoured, or if it's more pretty than anything??
ReplyDeleteClara, I am using my rosemary one on my steak tonight and the flavour is sutle but noticeable . Next weekend I am going to make the lemon on as that will be useful for chicken.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for a gift!
ReplyDeleteIt looks really nice and is so useful too!
I'll be having a go at this.
Thanks for sharing the recipe, Jo.

A friend made the rosemary and cumin salt for me and it is superb!
