Skin-tight clothing

source
I know I have covered this topic before, but I am (still) staggered and amazed by what young women are wearing today (how far girls are willing to push the boundaries). Someone needs to tell them that the skin-tight miniskirts they are choosing to wear reveal everything to anyone walking behind them. I walked behind one young woman (about 20) on the way to the theatre on Saturday night and not only was I able to see the outline of her underwear, her backside was as visible as if she wasn’t wearing anything as the skirt was so skin-tight.  Her young friend was wearing a (very) short lightweight summer dress, sadly she was overweight and from the back it was also far too revealing and ill suited to her figure. I am sure these girls think they look lovely, but don’t they realise how much they are revealing to all and sundry.

Only the other day there was an article in the newspaper (link) by Bettina Arndt (excuss the language used): . . . so many women now feeling absolutely entitled to dress as they like - bare tits, enticing flesh squeezed into the shortest, tightest clothing. Everywhere you look, women are stepping out dressed provocatively but bristling if the wrong man shows he enjoys the display.

The articles goes on to say: And men - well, they are in a total state of confusion. There are cocky, attractive, successful men, alpha males, revelling in this unexpected bounty, boldly eyeing off the assets of women they fancy as their prey.  Sensitive males are wary, not knowing where to look. Afraid of causing offence. And there are angry men, the beta males who lack the looks, the trappings of success to tick these women's boxes. They know the goodies on display are not for them. These are the men most likely to behave badly, blatantly leering, grabbing and sneering. For them, the whole thing is a tease. They know it and resent it.

No wonder the poor guys are in confusion and women don't care that they are causing this confusion. In fact, after Bettina Arndt wrote this article she was attacked by women who said men were to blame and women should be able to wear what they like. And if men do look or read the wrong message, its "sexual harassment" and should be punished.

Its all very sad and perhaps these young girls will look back one day and realise how bad they looked and be horrified, perhaps not.

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.

  1. Agreed. At the root is selfisness with no concern for others.

  2. Yes. Blunt but well said. I don't think they realize that being 'sexy' is not the same as being pretty. Pretty earns a woman (of any size or culture) respect and devotion. But then again the average person is living (as Ganeida pointed out) for their own pleasure and not to glorify God.

  4. Thanks for this post. It is blunt, but it is so needed!! I've been grieved to see women even in church settings wearing skin tight and/or short skirts and dresses, low-low necklines, and other things. I'm embarrassed for them sometimes. I wonder that they have so little respect for their brothers in Christ that they are so careless about casting a stumbling block.

My grandfather once made some comments about women's swimsuits and then mentioned that some women will say, "You just have a dirty mind." He said, "I'd like to tell them, 'And it's about time you learned it!'" His meaning was that men do think that way, and to tempt them to that is sin. I appreciated his honesty.

  5. So true to all above... I think it is horrifying... Most of these women just don't know better, I think. They've never tried dressing modestly and experiencing the respect dignity receives. In fact, perhaps they wouldn't even like the respect, because women (and men) have no desire to be truly respected in a clean and simple way. Everything is about themselves, no matter by what means. It is so terribly sad.

  6. Clara - modern women expect/demand respect regardless of what they wear and they don't understand when they don't get it. They are all mixed up.
