Noah and other Biblical adaptations

I for one won’t be rushing out to watch the movie “Noah” starring Russell Crowe or later on “Exodus” starring Christian Bale or “Mary” and I will certainly be giving “Son of God” a miss. I do not like or have any interesting in watching adaptations of the bible. The Word of God is the Truth and should never be altered for entertainment or sheer pleasure. Altering God's words is to say that we think as humans we could have done a better job. That God's words are not good enough for us.  However there are Christians who will be eager to see this movie because it is based (how ever loosely) on the Bible and they see this as a positive move and a way of getting God's message to the masses.

Every word of God is pure.
(Proverbs 30:5)

From what I have read, the movie Noah strays considerably from the truth in many aspects  and this is a worry. Instead of being "based on the truth", these movies, Noah included, become only a "slight resemblances of the truth" or perhaps in title only. How many people will watch Noah (or the other adaptations) and think that they are the true biblical stories. Perhaps a few will visit the bible to find out, but most won't. We are society that believes in what we are told.

Do you think this sort of film make a differences?

What do you think?

You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I commend you.

Deuteronomy 4:2

  1. I entirely agree - and this movie is *horrifying*. No, I haven't seen it, and nor will I. I read about it just last night and was very disturbed by what I read. I think it's worth passing on the article I read, despite a bit of strong language used in the article (and don't judge the article by it's title!!!):

    1. And yes, I do think this movie will make a difference - but not a good one. I think it shames God and I think God is just biding His time - after all, the film is WICKEDNESS, and the Scriptures say "...God is angry with the wicked every day" (Psalm 7:11).

    2. I read a number of different reviews and comments and the more I read the more concern I was. I read this article on Facebook this morning and agree with you. We just need to stay away from these sorts of films.

  2. I for one will probably watch this movie at some stage. Why? because when my non christian friends discuss it I will be able to have input in a positive way and tell them where and how this movie has strayed from the truth as presented in the Bible. There is no harm in watching this movie, if one knows the truth of Noah, watching the movie will only highlight what is wrong with it.

    1. Dear Anon,

Consider 1 Thessalonians 5:22 "Abstain from every form of evil.", however what I consider evils others won't. I also think that "Every word of God is pure." and no hollywood director can do better than God.

I think we will differ on this one.

  3. We went and saw it on the weekend. Whilst I was very disappointed with the movie itself I think its a powerful tool for Christians to be able to discuss these 'bible based' movies with non-Christians. The first thing I did after seeing it was go back and read God's version of the story.
I think its very important for Christians to see what main stream society sees (in terms of these biblical 'issues') and know how to stand up for God's word properly.
The movie of Jesus - the passion of the Christ - that came out about ten years ago had a very powerful movement in society towards the things of Christ. Anything that makes people look for Godly answers is a wonderful thing - no matter how small the number of people it changes, each one is valuable in God's sight. :-)

    1. If it wasn't about Noah, I won't see it anyway as I am no fan of Russell Crowe - never really liked his acting style. But I have heard that it wasn't a great film (regardless of topic) and didn't get very good ratings. It will be interesting to see what Margaret and David have to say on "The Movie Show" this week.

I know that none of my non-Christian friends and work colleagues have any plans to see it because of its biblical connections.

I never saw "Passion of the Christ" for the same reason so I can't really comment about that one.

    2. Yes I must agree that I'm not a huge Russell Crowe fan either.

it does make me wonder who these movies are aimed at?!?!?!?!?
Seems Christians aren't happy with them and then non-Christians aren't hugely interested in them.

I must admit that a huge number of my non-Christian fans have seen it so it has been good for me to give them a biblical perspective.

The passion of the Christ is one that I can honestly recommend as a good Christian film :-)

  4. The onus is on every believer to read and know the Word and it's Author to counter these falsehoods.

    1. Hi Ruby:))) Yes we do need to know His Word and know when we see something that more than wanders from the Truth.

Hope you are having a wonderful week.

  5. My grandfather used to say "we don't need to stand in the mud to tell them it is mud" and I would take that further. Far better we are standing outside the mud - on the Rock, which is Christ - offering the way of of salvation, than getting brought down by the sin!
I have been trying to think of one person in the Bible who succeeded by getting down with those in trouble to pull them out of it. Noah built a boat! You could say the Lord ate with publicans and sinners, but He was without sin - we cannot put ourselves in that category...

    My thoughts,
    Betsy

  6. My sons saw it over the weekend. The one with less biblical knowledge had 1/2 an hour with me clearing up the misconceptions, inaccuracies & downright falsehoods.

Where a movie sticks closely to the truth, I think these things can sometimes be useful & I know several successful evangelical ministries that use film to share the gospel. However, where the majority of it is someone's overactive imagination I think it does more harm than good. Most people don't think too deeply about anything, let alone the bible.

I won't be seeing it, mostly because I can't stand Russell Crowe.

    1. I watched The Movie Show last night and they reviewed this and weren't very flattering at all. I agree, these sorts of movies do more harm than good and I think they just cause confusion. And whilst some people go with a Christian friend, many don't, so they don't have anyone to clear up those inaccuracies. And no one really cares and many don't even believe these bible stories and after watching this, care less.

I also have a strong dislike for Russell Crowe and that alone is enough for me.

  7. Hi Joe, Came over from our blog WHO CAN STAND where I saw your comment. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here, and we hope it too is an encouragement to many to stay away from this movie!

  8. Dear Jo, The movie Noah was terrible, The Son of God was much better. I do not take these movies and use them for ANY standards, Just want Hollywood to know that we want something worth going to the movies for...

    1. Thanks Roxy - I will certainly be giving it a miss. I have never heard "The Son of God", I don't think it has appeared here at all.
