Housekeeping

Painting by John Sloane

“What really does work to increase the feeling of having a home and its comforts is housekeeping. Housekeeping creates cleanliness, order, regularity, beauty, the conditions for health and safety, and a good place to do and feel all the things you wish and need to do and feel in your home. Whether you live alone or with a spouse, parents, and ten children, it is your housekeeping that makes your home alive, that turns it into a small society in its own right, a vital place with its own ways and rhythms, the place where you can be more yourself than you can be anywhere else.”

― Cheryl Mendelson

How true  a clean and orderly home creates an environment of peace and calm  a place where we can be ourselves. In fact it is the only place we can be ourselves and that is why HOME is so important to us all. Dusting, vacuum cleaning, washing the clothes, doing the dishes, cleaning the bathroom, making beds may not be glamorous activities, but in reality, these things don't take very long (if done regularly) but the enjoyment for the entire family    a clean home   makes it all worthwhile.

I enjoy doing housework, ironing, washing, cooking, dishwashing. Whenever I get one of those questionnaires and they ask what is your profession, I always put down housewife. It's an admirable profession, why apologise for it. Your aren't stupid because you're a housewife. When you're stirring the jam you can read Shakespeare"

 Quote by Tash Tudor

Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.

Philippians 2:14

  2. I love organizing, but I have to push myself to clean. Fortunately, I love a clean home, so that is my motivation. There really is nothing like a clean and orderly home, with home-cooked meals. Cheryl Mendelson's book is full of good advice and hints.

  3. So true. It's the little things that make the biggest difference, I reckon. And these little bits and pieces of keeping house all add up to a refuge where our family can gather together to serve the Lord and love each other and grow together in Him. :)

    1. Those little things really do make a differences and everyone in the home enjoys that extra effort you have put into the home to make it special and it doesn't need to be grand or expensive to make a house a home.

  4. A great quote from Cheryl Mendelson. I hate cleaning, but the effort is definitely worth the rewards.

    1. My husband loves to clean the shower with his stream cleaner - I am happy to let him "play". He also is happy to clean the oven - another task I won't fight with him over!! I quite like dusting as it gives me the opportunity to re-arrange things!!

  6. "When you're stirring the jam you can read Shakespeare." Well, not Shakespeare, but I've been known to read while cooking - especially things that require long stirring times. :-) My timer also gets a lot of use reminding me to check on things that are cooking every few minutes so that I can "multi-task". :-)

    1. I have a very large book containing all of Shakespeares plays and I would get a very sore arm if I was holding it whilst stirring jam. I would perhaps read something less weighty!!

I use my timer a lot and take it with me if I leave the room or go out side!!

  7. Oh, I love that--"you aren't stupid because you're a homemaker." I chose to be a homemaker. To me that's the "smart" choice. Even with my children grown I try to keep in mind that my most important "job" is my home. ~Pamela
