Art Friday: Hats

Art Friday: Hats

Here is a fun collection of hats from the past. Some are lovely and look very comfortable, some are works of art, others I think would blow off in the slightest breeze!! Most are feminine, some are pretty (but not all!!) others are rather ugly.

. . . hats use to be worn whenever you went out, sadly that doesn't happen any more . . but it doesn't mean you can't wear a hat if you want to. Why not start a new trend!!

These are a mix of paintings and photos - a selection to show the different styles of hats that women once wore.

This collection is for Roxy from "Living from Glory to Glory", who especially requested a Hat Friday!! If you have a request, just let me know :))

  1. I hate hats, but your collection was very interesting! Some of them were really quite ugly, but perhaps there was some reason for them being so. And I guess not everyone has the same tastes as me... =)

    1. I really like the white hat with the red ribbon, that is my sort of hat - of course, of all the years I wore hats, none were ever as chic as that!! The lady with the thick gold chain is wearing the strangest of hats that looks very uncomfortable.

  2. What a fun post! I grew up in a church that for a while encouraged women to wear hats to church. Just when I got old enough to wear a hat, they quit doing it, and I was so sad about that! LOL... I remember going with my grandmother to stores and trying on hats and deciding which one I would wear when I was of age, and then poof, they were gone, and no one was wearing them. My mother used to make "tams" to wear to church, and we wore them too, little hats perched on top of our heads. Oh the memories of hats!

I thoroughly enjoyed your post, and if I had to pick a favorite, it would be a dainty little red or black hat with a small veil and a lovely array of flowers on the side. Nothing big or top heavy for me! I can't imagine wearing the ugly one you mentioned, the lady with the gold chain around her neck... ugh! My head hurts just looking at it! Anyway, enjoyed your post, so fun!

    1. I wore a hat to our family church meeting every Sunday without fail - but they weren't very pretty hats so I developed a dislike of hats - especially the winter berate!! My mother had quite a collection of hats as she had worn hats her entire life but I think all have been given away after her stroke. I do like the ones at the very top, perhaps because they both look pretty and quite comfortable to wear!!!

  3. I love the fashion of those days......love all the hats as they were obviously worn at that moment for a reason.
I try to figure out why they wore what they did and where they were going...

    1. Do you think those in olden days wore huge hats simply to out do the next lady - a statement of wealth?

    2. Certainly they sometimes were!

  4. I quite like hats, although some of the ones in this post are a bit questionable - like the gold one!!! However I don't think I wear hats well - or maybe I've just never really discovered the style that would suit me best. I like the idea of dressing up and wearing hats when going out and about. There's something very "ladylike" about it, in my opinion!! :) This was fun; I quite like several of the hats in this post!

    1. Some women wear hats beautifully as if they were born to wear hats - I am certainly not one of those. I do think a hat does make a woman look like a lady, just look at the Queen - she would look quite ordinary without her hat.

  5. I so enjoyed looking over these pictures of all the hats. They speak of life in a different time. I think a hat lends grace and beauty to the wearer. Thanks for posting. Visiting from Strangers and Pilgrims.

    1. Thanks :) hats do add grace and beauty as long as it is the right hat - some of the very strange hats that Princess Beatrice and Eugenie perhaps don't!!

  8. Dear Jo, I am so blessed and what an honor to do this post on hats so I could enjoy it! As I do love hats so much! I just wish wearing them were easier in a way... I always feel like I have something on my head! LOL
I think hats do help us see what the different styles have been and also the purpose of wearing in some cultures. I do miss seeing hats on the beach and in church! There was just something about hats that are just so lady like!
Thanks again Jo, You are very kind...
I just caught up on your last few posts, you always inspire me!
    Blessings, Roxy
