Too many shoes?

Image
Can a girl have too many shoes? Do you wear all the shoes you own? Do you want more? Do you buy a new pair every season? Due to a foot problem, a young woman was required to buy a comfortable pair of shoes that would help her feet recover and due to the price, bought only one pair. This is what she discovered after wearing one pair of shoes all year: Ultimately, my year of wearing one pair of shoes taught me a few things: that you can learn to enjoy having fewer choices and that, truly, no one really cares what's on your feet. Unless it's especially bright, interesting or ugly, it's background noise. How do I know that? Not long before the shoes finally died, a colleague who'd seen me almost every working day for the past year stopped me in the hall and said: "Cute shoes! Have I seen those before?” Only being able to wear one pair of shoes has changed the way I dress as a whole. Because I physically can't follow some fashions th...

Modern modesty

Image
Source: Hello magazine As you look through these photos from recent newspapers what is the first thing that strikes you about them ? MODESTY Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge (in cream), Princess Mary of Denmark (in orange) and the Sophie, Countess of Wessex (in blue) are all out at Royal Ascot (the annual horse racing event in Britain) a few days ago and the first thing that hit me was their outfits.  Here are all three modern women in modern outfits that are ALL modest.  The lengths of the dresses are below the knee, the necklines are high and cuts of the dresses are elegant.  Don't they all look feminine and pretty. Their make up is minimal, so to their jewellery. They are all wearing their hair up and it looks  beautiful and sophisiticated.  We too can dress elegantly, modern and feminine and still remain modest in our entire.

Fashion: Stilettos?

Image
According to an article in the Guardian ( LINK ) British women totter about in some of the highest heels in Europe, research reveals. With home-grown celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole leading the trend, the penchant for sometimes painful stilettos sees an average heel height of 3.3 inches (8.4cm). This compares to an average of 2.4 inches (6 cm) among French women and 2.7 inches (6.9cm) among German women. The Spanish were closer to the British in their love of height, wearing an average heel of 3.2 inches (8.1cm), the survey by foot care brand Compeed found. The Duchess of Cambridge is known for her “nude” 4.3 inch (11 cm) heels which has increased the wearing of stilettos by younger women. I have no idea how the Duchess does it considering the amount of walking she does. They must be super comfortable and soft.  Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of British women cited blisters as a significant source of pain resulting from wearing high heels. Psycho...

Dressing elegantly but modestly

Image
If I had to name two famous women who dress modesty but elegantly, it would have to be Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and Australian born, Princess Mary of Denmark. Two women who will one day become Queens. Whilst none of us can afford the wardrobes of these women (or the volume of clothes they own!) but we can get lots of ideas by looking at the clothes they wear. Their clothes are timeless , some of these outfits would have looked just as elegant in the 1960s as they do today and these dresses could be worn in 10 years time and still look as beautiful and as graceful as they do now.  It means we don't need to have a wardrobe filled with all the latest fashions (that we need to keep changing) if we stick to classic designs. These ladies don't only look  graceful in their clothing, the way their carry themselves is one of grace and elegance. The designs are simple , nothing overly complicated. In fact many of these dresses aren't impossible to make yourself. ...

The changing fashions of children and teens

Image
How would you describe modern children and teen wear? I find much of teen wear unattractive, unfeminine, immodest and often just plain ugly. As for younger children's clothes — well, that is a mixed bag, some are lovely and pretty, others much more questionable, especially when they try to replicate ugly adult wear for younger girls. The changes in children and teen clothing has been quite remarkable over the last 100 years. In this blog post I thought it would be fun (and perhaps some what depressing) to look at the changes that have occurred.  I think the two pictures above says it all - things have changed and perhaps not for the best!! Dainty is not a word one would use for 2015 as they did in 1920! The 1920s Indulging our children: There was a time when mum went shopping and bought clothes for her children, clothing was practical and mother only bought what she could afford.  Most mothers these days buy what their children want (even if they can't affor...

The 1950's style and modesty

Image
I do love the fashions of the 1950s. They were pretty, feminine and modest. They are a great example of beautiful outfits that covered the body, with no bits and pieces hanging out but still very stylish and elegant. The examples I have included show lots of pretty fabric (something we don't see much of these days), well cut dresses that show off female form without looking vulgar or seductive and sit  nicely below the knee (which keeps them modest when sitting down). These outfits compared to modern attire are so much more elegant and feminine. I would be very happy to see some of these outfits returning to the stores! "Your dresses should be tight enough to show you're a woman and loose enough to show you're a lady" (Edith Head) "Modesty is a virtue that shows love to others and brings glory to God through appropriate dress" ( Tim Challies) It is interesting to note that none of these women are wearing T-shirts, whilst I wear T-shirt...
