Bus tickets

Image
Now, you must be wondering what this blog entry will be about - what can a girl write about bus tickets!! For 30 years from the 1960's to the 1980's in the City of Adelaide (in the state of South Australia, Australia) all bus, tram and train tickets carried a slogan (through/verse) with between 920,00 and 990,00 travellers reading these every day. These were not any sort of slogan - they were compiled by Kenneth Leal, a retired Christian business man. Mr Leal had an idea - place a thought or slogan on the back of each ticket to cheer people up as they travelled their life's journey.   Many carried a Christian message of hope and encouragement and travellers would write to Mr Leal expressing their gratitude for his comforting words.  Some found inspiration at a dark moment, others were challenged by the words and some made people laugh.   Isn't this a great story of one mans idea to spread happiness and the word of God. Sadly by the 1980's this came to an en...

Check out this blog . . .  Dreaming of Days Gone By. . . I would like to introduce you to a dear blogger friend of mine (to be more correct my second cousin!) who has a great blog.  Clara (that's her in the photo) is married to a lovely American (see some do immigrate to Australia) and has 2 gorgeous children whom they home-school.  Stealing the words from Clara's blog:  "I am aspiring to be a Biblical housewife, homekeeper and mother. It is my desire to raise my children for the Lord, to be the best wife I can possibly be (see Proverbs 31 - where I get my inspiration from!), and to give Him the glory throughout my life."

The ramekins were too full . . . . .

The other day I was reading Abounding Treasures blog about a cake disaster story hich made me chuckle.  Dallas made the comment " Well, presentation of a dessert is pleasant to the eyes but I asked myself what was more important ~ flavour or looks? ".  Last night my son and I decided to cook some dessert - delicious individual chocolate puddings.  Thinking my ramekins were much bigger than those used in the recipe I suggested to my son that we use only 4 rather than the 8 the recipe recommended. This is what happened . . . .  May may have looked bad, but tasted WONDERFUL.  Even the bits that bubbled out like volcano lava were SUPERB!!!!  Soft and creamy chocolate . .  what is better than that.

What to Forget & What to Remember Forget each kindness that you do As soon as you have done it; Forget the praise that falls to you The moment you have won it; Forget the slanders that you have hear Before you can repeat it; Forget each slight, each spite, each sneer, Wherever you may meet it. * * * Remember every kindness done To you whate're its measure; Remember praise by other won And pass it on with pleasure; Remember every promise made And keep it to the letter; Remember those who lend you aid, And be a grateful debtor. * * * Remember all the happiness That comes your way in living; Forget each worry and distress, Be hopeful and forgiving. Remember good, remember truth Remember heaven’s above you; And you will find through ages and youth True joys, and heart to love you. * * * "We will remember Thy love” (Song of Sol 1:4) " Forgetting those things which are behind" (Phil 3:13) "We will remember ...

Dress-making

Image
Twenty two years ago I bought a sewing machine and made a few dresses. Then I put it away for 10 years.  It came out of hiding for a few days and was quickly returned.  But after reading about the wonderful clothes that my blogger friends have been making, I felt inspired and as a result the sewing machine is sitting on my kitchen table, I have bought some dark brown fabric for winter, I have stocked up on pins, scissors, thread AND bought 2 patterns (see below) now I just need to have the courage to start!!!! The first skirt will be A (long straight) from the pattern below (3830).  The pattern does say "QUICK AND EASY" so I am assuming they are telling the truth!!!! If this turns out OK, I will make more. I can't buy these skirts in the shop, so if I want them, I have to make them.  I though this was a really nice set of skirts - very easy - two pieces with elastic at the waist - can't go wrong.  These will be perfect for summer.  Just have to work out...

My mother as a little girl. I had never seen this photo until this week when my mum sent me a bundle of photos she had found whilst sorting through their belongs (as they are moving). * She has the most beautiful smile * * * * * My grandfather as a young man (my mothers father) Didn't he have very fine features? He wore those starched shirts almost all his life - they must have dug into his neck line. He was a chemist and owned a chemicals factory which was sold when he died, I was about 7 years old.
