DVD review: Babies

Image
This is one adorable film  . . . and even before I tell you anything about the film, I am giving it FIVE STARS .  Its beautiful. Movie : Babies Genre : Documentary Rating : G (In Britain and Aust) So why did I enjoy it so much.  Babies followings four babies from birth to age one: Ponijao from Namibia, Bayar from Mongolia, Mari from Tokyo, and Hattie from San Fransisco – Babies is a look at what growing up is like in different parts of the world - in fact it isn't a lot different, babies do the same things, no matter where they live.  And their mothers . . . they love their babies to bits no matter where they live, they just do things slightly different. There is no narration, the joy is watching these 4 children tell their story.   It isn't boring, 76 minutes glued to the TV watching these children and what they might do next.   I did feel sorry for the cats in a few scenes!! It is currently in the cinema in Australia - but available on D...

National Families Week

Image
This week is National Families Week  (15–21 May) with the theme ‘ Sticking together: families in good and tough times ’. The aim of the week is to . . . encourage everyone to think about the things that make their family strong in both good and tough times whatever their circumstances.  A relevant topic at the moment as many families both in Australia and overseas are struggle with increase pressures of raising children, the cost of living, lack of employment, affordable housing etc....  For many, times are tough and there isn't anything rosy around the corner. It all can get a bit depressing at times.  For non-Christian families, it must look very bleak, with no hope, however for Christian families, there should always be hope and encouragement as you are not travelling alone. The power of pray is amazing and when things get tough in my home, I pray . . . . continually. . . My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct m...

. . . for the joy of the LORD is your strength.  Nehemiah 8:10  If you are looking for joy, it can only be found in one place, that is, our Heavenly Father . Joy cannot be found in earthly possessions Joy cannot be bought with money Joy cannot be found in a bigger fancier house Joy cannot be found by having more friends Think of all the things that make up the joy of the LORD, and your smile can't help but last forever. It is not possible to always be happy - but it is possible to always have the joy of the LORD . And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation.  Psalm 35:9 ~oOo~

Changing names

Image
Breaking news . . . . women are taking a more traditional approach to marriage and increasingly adopting their husband's surname after getting married.   Surname trends "comes and goes" and we have seen until recently a swing towards women keeping their maiden names.  Some women had quite strong feelings about not changing their name as it was seen as giving up their independence's and not wanting to “belong” to someone else.  However, others were eager to change their names to acknowledge to others they were married . . . these women were very proud of becoming “Mrs Smith”.  One problem that arises when the woman keeps her maiden name is what surname to give the children – do you hyphenate the child’s surname, use dads name or mums? This can become quite messy. Interestedly changing ones name is not universal, many cultures do not do this at all. For example in Scotland, until the 20th century, married women kept their maiden names, but today the pr...

Around the home: those missing socks

Image
Did you know that the 9th of May is Lost Sock Memorial Day. It is the day that recognizes your drawer full of unmatched socks. Each unmatched sock represents a missing sock. Do you throw away these lonely socks or do you keep them just in case their missing mate turns up? According to the official website, Lost Sock Memorial Day is the day you spend a little time (as little as possible) searching for those missing socks. After a (very) brief search, and in good "Memorial" spirit, spend a minute reflecting upon how warm and comforting the missing socks were on your stinky toes. Then, by all means, get on with your life. Today is also a good opportunity to toss out all of your unmatched socks. In Australia you are now too late to do this (my apologies for not reminding you earlier, perhaps put it in you calendar for next year). But for those in the USA, go for it . . . spend a few moments remembering those poor missing socks. You could also think of anything else has go...
