A questions to my readers?

I have a question - and it is all about decades?  I thought I understood (and maybe I do or maybe I don't ) - but I have noticed, leading to my confusion, that some newspapers and TV's are referring to the "new decade" that we are now in.  How can this be - I would assume that the year 2001 was the start of this current decade (annoyingly known as the noughties?!) and as a result the new decade (the teenies!?) would commence in 2011.

Using my argument the first year was 1, the second year was 2 and so forth until we each 10 (or 2010) which means the new decade must start on 2011.

Can anyone clear this up?  According to the reliable source "Wikipedia" - I have it completely wrong and the year 2000 was the start of the noughties??

While I am here I would like to complain - it is currently the first week of January, Christmas has only just left the shops and Easter is 3 months away - SO WHY ARE THERE HOT CROSS BUNS FOR SALE IN MY SUPERMARKET..............

I love hot cross buns

I eat them toasted with butter

I eat far too many

So I do not need to be tempted for 88 days.....

  2. We've completed 10 years (2000 to 2009) -- we are now into (INTO) the second decade; just like when a child has completed two years, he is into his third year.

So, the 1800's was the 19th century, and so on. In the 1800's we had completed 1,800 years and were INTO the 19th century.

So, yes, in 2010, we are INTO (coming into, not having completed it yet) the second decade.

  4. When you were born, it was the start of your first decade - therefore the first year started at day 0 year 0 - you did not start your first year when you turned 1. So you turned 10 at the very end of the 9th year (or one day after that to be exact) and the moment you turned 10, the next 10 years were beginning as your 10th birthday was at the end of living for 10 years, not the beginning of your 10th year. So the same goes for decades and centuries. The day a 100 years is reached is the last day of that 100 years, IE 31st December midnight, therefore 1st of January must be the start of the next 100 years. So you need to count all of 0 because the start was 0, then 1,2,3 etc, and when you reach the end of 9 (9.9999etc), ten periods of time have past. make sense?

  8. haven't seen any hot cross buns for sale here yet... but I'm sure they're not far away. Because I often bake my own bread I tend to not necessarily see what is selling in the bread section of the store often, so I don't get so tempted to buy them!
I see others have cleared up the confusion regarding the decades, so I won't say anything about that! :)
