The Kookabura

The Kookaburra (part of the Kingfisher family) lives in woodlands and open forest and like to eat snakes, lizards, insects and our barbecue.  We had 5 that visited us daily at our cabin and they were so friendly.

Those who have lived in the Australia countryside/bush would know the distinct sound that they make - the Kookaburra "laughs" at dawn and it is a beautiful sound - they don't make the laughing sounds at any other time of the day.

According to an Aboriginal legend, the kookaburra's famous chorus of laughter every morning is a signal for the sky people to light the great fire that illuminates and warms the earth by day. Click here to hear the sound of their laughing: http://www.soundboard.com/sb/kookaburra_sound_clips.aspx

Sitting on the barbeque having a chat.
When the owners first bought the property they noticed the lack of birds and thought this was odd.  After a few months they discovered traps and someone was catching all the birds (maybe to sell).  Once the traps were removed the birds started to slowly return and have become very friendly.
Another chat in the evening.  When you spoke to them they would move their tails up and down - hard to know what they were "thinking".
Just as we were about to leave, these 3 Kookaburra arrived it was almost as if they were also saying their goodbyes.

  2. Hi Jo,
Aren't they beautiful - the colours that God created them in are absolutely resplendent!

What an absolute blessing to have these Kookaburras visit you on a daily basis.

  3. Magnificent birds with magnificent voices! We get them occasionally in the back yard but they don't call regualarly since we don't feed them.

  5. Beautiful yes but beware they can be dangerous. A friend was eating a sausage at a BBQ when one swooped down to get the 'snake' & left a gash on his lip that needed 4 stitches.

  6. Jo, you already know how much I love these birds.

Wonderful photos. I am amazed at how close they came to you and your husband. They must be used to visitors being generous with their holiday 'snacks'.

I wish I could see more of them around here.

  8. Anonymous: Yes, we were very careful with these birds, especailly when eating around them. They are wild so could hurt, even by accident. And they have very sharp beaks.
