The Old Rugged Cross
(words by George Bennard, 1873 - 1958)
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.
(Refrain:)
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.
(Refrain)
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
a wondrous beauty I see,
for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
to pardon and sanctify me.
(Refrain)
To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then he'll call me some day to my home far away,
where his glory forever I'll share.
(Refrain)

I had many favourite hymns as a child (we spend Sunday evenings singing hymns with one of my brothers playing the piano), one was Onward Christian Soldiers and the other was The Old Rugged Cross, I still love singing it
I love that hymn too... I couldn't pick just a couple favourites - there are too many that I love singing! xo
ReplyDeleteO'no I have many but as a child this was a big favourite!!
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother's favorite song - I can still hear her singing this and humming as she went about her daily chores. Brings back some cherished memories~~

Aren't the words so precious!! Powerful and beautiful hymn Jo. And of course, I always love the pictures you post ;)
ReplyDeleteHymns are so wonderful! I really like the Old Rugged Cross, too. And a long list of others. Such great inspiration, and a beautiful way to focus on the Savior.
ReplyDeleteoh, I just love this hymn so much!
ReplyDeleteWe don't sing hymns in my church but I do have a few cds of hymns and I am now starting to listen to these great old hymns again as I want to introduce them to my dd.
I love that one too, but my all time favourite is "O Sacred Head", because the words are awesome and I am such a sucker for Bach.
