Keeping husband happy

There are some foods my husband will not eat and there are others that are a must - to keep husband happy, there are few things I need to remember when cooking dinner and these are:

Potatoes: A meal without potatoes is not a meal . .  he isn't fussy about how the potato is presented on his plate eg the Cook can mashed, boiled, roasted, baked, stuffed but as long as there is potato dear husband is a happy man.  In case you were wondering, no he isn't Irish, he is a Welshman.
Rice: Rice is NOT a substitute to potatoes, therefore a dish with rice will not be filling enough or be considered a serious evening meal.
Chillies: All meals must contains chillies, however as the cook (that's me) does not like chillies, it is added later by dear husband usually in the form of a chillie sauce.  The Cook is no longer upset when her beautiful dishes are covered in chillie sauce.
Pineapple: Dear husband strongly dislikes pineapple in any dish, so no pineapple on pizza and we do not eat sweet and sour pork with pineapple.
Beetroot:  Dear husband reminds the cook every-time she is about to use beetroot that he does not like it. I think he is concerned that Cook may have forgotten that he dislikes this red vegetable so he tells her often.
Curries: Dear husband LOVES hot curries, the cook does not.  In fact the Cook doesn't cook curries, if dear husband would like to have a curry he cooks it himself.  He eats curries with potato and not rice.
Cheese: Dear husband LOVES cheese, he likes the mouldy sorts of cheese, the Cook does not.  The fridge contains a variety of cheeses to make all family members happy. Dear husband likes cheese sandwiches (late at night) so important not to run out of bread.
Tomatoes: Dear husband is not fond of tomato in his dishes - however some dishes call for tomatoes so Cook is clever and hides the tomato and dear husband is none the wiser.  Just like she did when the children were little!!

If I (the Cook) remembers all these things,  dear husband is happy.

As for me (the Cook), I don't mind potatoes, but I don't like eating them 365 days per year.  I like rice and when I have rice dear husband eats potato. I love pineapple and eat it on my side of the pizza, I also love beetroot and enjoy it on my salad. I don't eat curries. I love cheese but not blue cheese. Some dishes just need tomato in them (eg lasagna).

  1. Your tastes sound very similiar to mine Jo. I am with you on all the things you dislike eg chilli's and curries. I definitely don't like mouldy cheeses. But other cheeses, I love.

Gotta keep the man happy! lol I try my best to accommodate my husband's likes/dislikes also.

ps. I chuckled at the tomato hiding trick ;)

  2. Ditz[gotta remember to call that girl by her new name!] STAR & I are rice & veggie, no meat, eaters. Dearest is a meat & spuds guy. *sigh* I use so many pots when I have to cook a meal these days. Nothing hot for me but Dearest once took on a Vendor in Andorra who tried to prepare a pattie so spicy my Dearest couldn't eat it. He couldn't. I was ill just watching & took myself away. Gotta keep the man happy but I WILL NOT cook seafood. Ever. Not for any reason. Not even to keep the man happy. ☺

  5. LOL!
I have a meat and spuds man and that suits me just fine.♥
I occasionally cook curry and rice, which the kids and I love, when hubby is away for some reason. If I serve a mince dish with even the slightest hint of curry he smothers it in tomato sauce. Yuck!

  6. The only I curry I really like (I actually love it) is Massaman - a Thai dish. You can have beef or chicken with it, and it includes potatoes. It is a sweet curry and not at all hot... although you could make it hot if you wanted to... it really is delicious!

  7. Such a cute and colourful post. My DH doesn't like veggies, so I frequently hide them in things (casseroles or sauces). He LOVES curries, I didn't before we were married, but I will eat them now. He has to add spice to his. I often wondered just how much time the average wife/mother spends preparing food for her family. I know it must 50% of my day or more. Gorgeous post--loved the pictures! (PS--I'm with your husband. I hate beetroot!)

  8. I understand - I'm also married to a potato man! Mine also has a thing about how often he eats tomato products....which I find sad, as I could eat Italian style once a week, easily.

  10. Joyfulmum - the idea for this blog was the other day when I ordered pizza and hear all about the evils of pineapple on pizza and only recently I served a meal with rice and heard about the importance of potatoes!!! Men are funny creatures. I am the only person in my household that loves rice pudding

Bonnie - I love beetroot, especially freshly cooked, the smell is wonderful and reminds me of summer!!

  12. This post made me remember the things I like to eat but don't buy so much any more because my husband doesn't like them, and the things I never used to like but now eat just to keep him happy.

I'm very lucky that these things are very small in number. He eats just about anything.

My husband dislikes cucumber. If he ever sees a cucumber in the fridge he tells me repeatedly not to give him any.

  13. Mum-me - your cucumber story is a bit like the beetroot in my house. My husband is always telling me he doesn't like it - repeatedly!!!

  14. I'm glad you put this up, my husband has his own quirks (don't we all) and my friends think he is very fussy, sounds similar to yours. My dear Dad used to also insist on potato with every meal!

  15. I don't have these problems in my household - anything I like to cook or eat, Dan will eat (as will the children)... It is more the opposite for me - there are many many foods he loves that I do not! I guess I'm the fussy one - and yet compared with other people I know, I'm not fussy at all!!! :P Everyone is so different, and a lot of it has to do with the way we were raised and whether or not we are the adventurous type!
