Stormy weather

 Lightening over Sydney Harbour

When I was little I would hide under the table when it was lightening and thundering, cry and making a big noise.  I hated it.  It was very scary.

These days I am slightly more mature!!  Anyway, if I did climb under the table I am not sure I would be able to get back up!!

This is fortunate as we have been having quite a few thunderstorms lately, including at 5am yesterday morning (along with hail and pouring rain) and evening.   In fact, as long as I am safely indoors I don't mind the thunder/lightening at all. I am not fond of driving during lightening, even though I am probably quite safe.

When we lived in Darwin we would get nightly thunderstorms during the wet season (monsoon) and I would lie awake at night watching the sky light up. It was quite magical.  One of Gods wonders. God has complete control over the thunder, the rain, the hail, the sunshine, the wind and we shouldn't grumble with "too much rain", "not enough rain" . . . . . God knows what He is doing, however we do like to disagree with Him from time to time. However I do wish he would make the thunder a little quieter at 5am in the morning.

Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. Psalms 147:8

PS I use to think (when I was small) that thunder was God re-arranging his furniture.  Of course I always believed what my brothers told me!!

  2. Haha!! Brothers have a way of teasing sisters, I see... :)

Lightning and storms are certainly very amazing - and whenever there is fear it is good to remember Who makes the storms and the One who is in control of them.

I love it how the Scriptures tell us that God's voice is like thunder - that comforts me in severe storms because I know God is love and if His voice sounds like thunder, then thunder is no longer frightning! I also love this passage about storms:

The waters saw Thee, O God, the waters saw Thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled. The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: Thine arrows also went abroad. The voice of Thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook. Thy way is in the sea, and Thy path in the great waters, and Thy footsteps are not known.
    (Psalms 77:16-19)

  3. Jo,

I must confess, I am not a fan of thunder and lightening either, although I don't think that I would hide under a table. My husband might think that I was nuts!

We don't get much hail storms here. When we do, it's rather small, and the hail almost looks like light snow. I don't like the sound of hail as it crashes down upon the ground. I get freaked-out when hail hits the windows though, for I think the hail is going to come crashing through the house. Luckily, we don't get much of that type of weahter here.

    Blessings,

  4. Clara - when writing this I was reading all the different verses where the word "thunder" is used - God uses thunder to remind us of our sins and trangressions, other times to remind us that we belong to God and that is created belongs to Him - yes, I can imagine that voice from the heavans talking to us, therefore it cannot be scary.

Michelle Katherine - they are amazing photos of Gods power. Makes me feel quite small compared to that sort of power

  5. Jo,
What an amazing picture! My little ones get scared sometimes, too, when there is thunder and lightning. I'm so glad I can offer them the truth from His Word that they are secure in His arms and encourage them to consider just how amazing God's creation is. Truly, those lightning storms are one of God's wonders.

  6. I too would cry when much younger during thunderstorms. The loud noise would frighten and startle me. I thank the Lord now that I can view thunder and lightning as wonderous works of our mighty God!

  7. yea it was quite loud here last night and calls for mummy were heard from the bedroom:)
I told Rebekah about "God moving his furniture" as that's what my mother in law told my dh when he was growing up, it brought much relieved humour at the right time last night!

  8. I never experienced a monsoon until my recent visit to El Salvador. It was amazing! The rain came down so heavy that we couldn't even hear ourselves speak. All we could do was watch and listen to the show.

God is great and mighty for sure.

I remember being told the same thing when I was a child... God moving the furniture about lol...

  11. Mrs Santos - When we lived in the tropical north, it would rain so hard that it was almost impossible to drive as I couldn't see in front of me. However as it could rain for hours I had no choice but to crawl home in the car, it could be very scary especailly if the road was busy with other cars. God always took care of me and I made it safely on each occasion.

We don't get that sort of rain where I now live and I do miss the smells of tropical rain.

  12. I've always love a good storm. I think because mum would call us all to stand and watch the display of God's handiwork. Mind you, I don't like being out in them!

  13. My uncle, a bowler, used to like to say that the thunder was God bowling. I prefer the furniture line, myself!
