Why worry

How often do you worry about your family, your finances, your spouse or about a friend?  We all worry to some extent.  Most of us can't help it.  We seem to worry over all sorts of things, sometimes quite trivia problems, others very important.  However if we follow the Word of God, we should not worry at all.  Because worry says "I don't trust you quite enough God to answer my prayers and meet my needs . . . I am going to worry just in case".   However I don't need to look far into the scriptures to find my instructions . . . they are very clear.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests known unto be made God. Philippians 4:6

If we live by faith, we need to believe 100% that God has everything under control. He doesn't need our help.  In fact He can do a far better job without us interfering. True. I have a long way to go to completely trust in God.  I think I share this problem with many others.

I particularly like this verse from Matthew 6:27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? (NKJV).  How true.  No matter how much we worry it doesn't change a thing. It is simply a waste of time and energy, energy we can use on more productive things in our lives.  In fact if we calculated the hours we have spent worrying, imagine what we could have achieve in that time instead. We need to Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Worry can lead to all sorts of problems, including depression and other illnesses.  It isn't healthy to worry and we don't need to.  No matter what happens in your life (or in mine) remember 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Because once we do, our worries will melt away.  He is caring for you and me.

Trust in God, especially at this time of year when life can get very hectic. Give it a go.
’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
And to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus says the Lord!”

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

  3. Absolutely right - worrying is a useless waste of time.

    However, there is a difference between being organised and worrying. My HB often tells me not to worry when I am trying to get things ready for a holiday etc.... If it hadn't been for my 'worrying' there would have been many times we would have not had essential items we needed for those events.

    On the other hand, while I totally agree that God has everything under control, time after time I have seen that God's idea of 'under control' and our idea differ quite startlingly. An acquaintance is in the last stages of breast cancer. She worries about her four children. Her husband worries about how he will cope. Baring a miracle, she will soon be in heaven. But times like this are sent to test our faith, I believe.

  5. Jo,
    Amen! I used to be such a worrier, and I just couldn't grasp that all my worrying didn't change a single thing. To understand God's sovereign care of me has been such a transforming thing. Such comfort there is in this truth!

    Have a very Merry Christmas! I'm so glad to have met you this year!

  7. This is such an important post, especially in the hectic, very stressful and worrisome times we live in. But the Bible is timeless, and God knew all about our current world conditions in eternity past, and still wrote those words about how we should not worry!!
    And I love that hymn, it is beautiful and so encouraging.
    This post is a wonderful reminder, Jo! :)

  9. Jo,

    I know "in theory" that I am not supposed to worry and rely on the Lord for all things, but that is not always an easy task to do. However, I did appreciate this post. It was something that I needed to "hear" today.

  10. If only~~

    I worry almost every day of my life dear Jo. I pray every day - and I do turn my worried over to God - it makes me feel so much better to do so - like a burden has been lifted from my shoulders~~

    Merry Chrismas Jo - to you and your family!

  11. One of the beautiful qualities that shines out from really Godly people I have met, is their ability to take responsibility (Like Mum-me with the organising) but quietly and patiently entrust all the outcomes to the Lord. I yearn for such trust and faith one day, too!
    God's sovereignty is a precious truth which sustains his people as he works all things together for our good!

  12. Lady Rose - not worrying is very difficult to do, especially if you are worrying about a love one. However each small step you make in the direction of the Lord and trusting Him, you move that little bit closer. We all find it very difficult but slowly I am learning the worry gets me know where. I am married to someone how worries and is not a believer and he doesn't understand at all. I send all things to the Lord in prayer, there isn't anything else I can do.

    Blessings dear friend.
