WEEK 2

Seagulls at Malua Bay, South Coast New South Wales

Weather: Overcast and rain during the week, quite humid and muggy - very unusual for Canberra, which is hot and dry at this time of the year.  Today however is sunny and warm - but still muggy.  My hair has been horrible all week!

Cooking: I managed to finally bake bread that DH really likes and so do I. I haven't bought any this week and hopefully won't need to for a while as I plan to bake all our bread from now on! I am quite excited that I managed to tactual this challenge (and slight fear).  It feels good!!
These are some of the cupcakes I made for my future daughter-in-law.  She loved them and Tristan thought they were very cute.  His cupcakes had boy pictures on!!

Children: My youngest has been at the coast this week and having a wonderful time fishing, collection shells, going for walks and relaxing.  However the weather has been overcast and wet so no swimming as it is just too cold (yes, it is summer not that you would know it!!).  As you already know, Tristan turned 23 on Friday and today I am making his cake!

Out and about: Only to work - no where exciting!
Around the home: DH decided to clean the carpets today (hiring a carpet cleaner) so my house looks like a complete mess - I hate messes so I am trying not to look at it.  It stresses me to much.

Watching: I have watched 2 DVD's this week, the first was "Funny Face" (1957) with the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn and the not so handsome Fred Astaire (looking rather old in his blue cardigan) - I love this film for the wonderful 1950s fashion.  I also watched "Dam Busters" (1955) about the British bombing of German dams during WWII.  A very interesting film.

Bible reading: I have been reading Job, quite apt this week with all the suffering in Queensland (and now parts of New South Wales and Victoria) - we wonder why God lets this happen - sometimes it is hard to see how God is working, his mysteries don't always reveal themselves to us.  Sometimes our sufferings is God showing us a different route that He wants us to take.
Reading: Besides what I was reading last week, I have been looking at at "Frederic, Lord Leighton" which is full of beautiful artwork that I could spend hours viewing.  I have also been enjoying "Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700 - 1915" which is also full of wonderful dresses that I would love to wear (but not clean the house in) - full of details as you can see in the photos below.

Gardening:  No gardening this week - too wet.  Lots of happy snails with all this rain.

Memory lane:
My brothers and I after Sunday church sitting at the pier not far from my grandfathers home. All dressed in our Sunday best. All the boys in suits and my in my bonnet (which I still own but no longer wear)!!

That's a cute picture of you as a child! Is the bonnet still in good condition? I love bonnets, it's too bad ther're not commonly worn anymore!!

  2. Hi Jo,

This is the prettiest blog I've ever been to!

We just watched Funny Face a few weeks ago. Have you seen "Random Harvest"? It's another great old movie that we stubbled upon.

  3. We're going to have to find that book "Fashioning Fashion"...looks great. I also love the beautiful fashion of the fifties. I am slowly altering my wardrobe to incorporate more of it's style.

Also, thank you so much for the link to the still life artist. Going over there, right now. I absolutely loved the strawberry paining - wish I could have it for my kitchen.

Have a wonderful day. Hope the monster cake turned out well.

  4. John, thanks so much for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I haven't heard of Random Harvest, will need to look it up. I love those old movies, they have something that modern movies lack - perhaps more style!

  5. Clara - the bonnet is in quite good condition - they have gone out of fashion and most mothers would never consider putting one on their 2 year old.

  6. Yes, I know - I don't know if I've ever seen a child wear one in modern times. However, Dolly still wears bonnets, she likes them and they look so cute on her! :)

  7. Clara - Laura wore one for many years in Little House on the Prairie and so did the ladies in P&P!!

  8. Loved reading about your week Jo and happy birthday to your handsome son! You've done a great job with your boys!
Can I ask if the bread you are making is whole meal as I am yet to find an easy wholemeal recipe that we like:(

This is the recipe I made today and it was excellent. I use a Kitchen Aid so I don't know how much you need to change the order in this recipe. You will find other wholemeal recipes on this sight. This is a great spot for recipes.
