N is for nice

N is for NICE

Do you think that being nice is going out of fashion?

I was taught to be nice to people, people that I know and to those that I don't, but I fear that its not being taught to young people the way it was taught to my generation and we are seeing far more rudeness about.  Of course, not every young person is rude, but I think it is becoming far more noticable. However it isn't just young people who can be rude . . . older people can be just as rude or selfish as well.

How hard can it be to:
  • Smile at other people (but not a fake smile)
  • Say hello with warmness
  • Remain civil even when meeting a person who doesn't like you or you feel uncomfortable with (no need for rudeness)
  • Start a conversation
  • Offer compliments to others - it can make their day
  • Send a card to someone who needs cheering up
  • Be polite to others
  • Saying thanking
  • Offer to help
  • Treat people the way you like to be treated
  • Do things that are fun to lift the spirits of someone else that may be down.
  • Pay attention when someone is talking to you.

I went looking in the bible for verses on this topic and there is no shortage of instructions about being kind or nice to others:

Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. (1 Peter 4:9)

And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
(Luke 6:31)

Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another. (Romans 12:10)

A friend loves at all times. And a brother is born for adversity.
(Proverbs 17:17)

So I think it is quite clear - be nice and kind to others regardless of how they treat you. Forget about what the world does, we know that it is slipping into decline and we don't need to follow.

So I am sending you all a BIG SMILE and HUG

Let brotherly love continue
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers

  3. Hi Jo,
You have highlighted something we all can do for each other.
Nice....a good word to use to guide our actions. A smile CAN cheer up someone's day.
    Have a good week
    God Bless

  4. I have to agree that we aren't expected to be as nice as we once were. I tend to see it as a cultural shift away from being trained/taught to be polite and put others' feelings first, instead of just dumping our personal bad moods and anger onto anyone we see. Once upon a time we were taught to think about others - now it's just what makes me happy (or not) at any given time. Do you agree?
