Part 7: How to overcome stress at home

I thought I would write a series called "Keeper of the home for busy ladies", in particular for those, like me, who work outside the house either full-time or part-time.  However, we are all busy ladies and we all need as much encouragement as possible to get through the week in one piece. These are tips  and ideas for creating a cosy home for our families that don't take many hours to do, but add so much to our love ones lives.

Part 7: How to overcome stress at home

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. (Philippians 4:6)

If you are stress at home . . . nothing will go smoothly.  It will affect your relationship with your husband (who you are meant to be supporting as his helpmate), your relationship with your children, it will affect how you run your home and when you are at work. It is important to get on top of stress and return back to a calm and peaceful state.  Yes, I know, much easier said than done.

According to Emilie Barnes in her book "500 time saving hints for every woman" the better organised we are the less stress we will suffer and she has a few tips that will help in becoming more organised and therefore less stressed.

  • Do you have a certain place to store your unpaid bills until they need to be paid?
  • Do you have the habit of not finding your car keys or glasses easily?
  • Do you have a filing system to place all of your important papers, such as deeds, insurances policies, auto warranties, income tax records, health records, birth certificates etc..?
  • Is your car serviced regularly?
  • Is your car fairly clean with a minimum of trash?
  • Do you hang up your clothes when you take them off or do you leave them on the floor?
  • Is your yard regularly mowed and maintained?
  • Do you save money each payday?
  • Do you spend less than you earn?
  • Do you have manageable credit card debt?
  • Do you have a system for managing the payment of bills and keeping tabs of savings?

These are all areas of stress - when in a hurry and you can't find the bill that needs to be paid or a child's birth certificate - it generates stress.  If we don't take care of the small things in life, they will soon become monsters with a life of their own. This is so important for busy ladies, in particular those who are working outside of the home. Stay on top of the small things.

To help my family, I bought a couple of these and spend half a day going through all our paperwork and dividing it up into categories. Only the other day my son wanted his birth certificate. It was easy for me (over the phone) to tell him where to look.

If we can reduce our stress levels by doing these small things, we will have far more energy to focus on what is important - our family, our husbands. And remember - if you are feeling stressed - the best thing to do first and for most is to PRAY. The Lord is waiting to hear from you.

If paying the bills is an area of stress, create a schedule -- set aside time each week (mine is Thursday mornings) to work on bill paying. Make sure everything is in one place so it easy to pick up and work on. Remember you aren't doing this alone, marriage is a partnership and you and your husband are in this together. Your husband may be able to suggest better ways to do things that will reduce stress.  Two heads are always better than one!!

For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Ephesians 5:31-32

RELAX, IT IS ALL IN GODS HANDS IF ONLY WE LET HIM TAKE CONTROL
