What might happen, may never happen

Morning hug by Robert Doncan

I was reading God Bless our Home by Mrs A and she asked a question that I am sure every mother with young children has either asked or thought about.

"A wife like me who's heart can't bear the thought of any one of her daughters being a future "prodigal" or marrying unequally yoked?"

We all dream of our children future and without even really trying to, we map out what we would like our children to be doing as adults (we have even had them dressed and walking down the wedding aisle). But sadly, things don't always go to plan. Our sons and daughters have others plans, their plans, not ours . . . whether that involves marrying a guy we don't like or becoming a career woman. Their plans may break our hearts and we wonder what we have done wrong, however we cannot control our children forever, at some point a parent must let go, no matter how painful it might be.

All we can do is build the best foundation possible and leave the rest in the Lords hands and I think this quote from "Quiet Moments Alone With God" by Emilie Barnes sums it up so well "Take your problems and worries of today, wrap them in a box, and close the lid very tightly.  Then, my dear, put it into the wonderful hands of Jesus. Now walk away and don't take it back. Eighty percent of the things we worry about never happen anyway --so let Jesus take the remaining 20 percent. He will give back to you 100 percent of His life and peace." You can't spend years worrying about something that may never happen and if it does, you know what to do.

I broke my parents hearts and my mother prayed by a number of years before the Lord answered hers prayers. I was a rebellious teenager who no longer wanted to be told how to live my life so in my late teens I went off and did my own thing. It certainly wasn't part of my mothers dreams for me and it was probably the last thing she expected.  I married a non-Christian and moved across the country.  But the Lord never forgets his sheep Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!' I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. (Luke 15:3-7) so don't worry, the Lord watchs over your children, He always does and will search out the lost.

My sons aren't perfect and haven't done all that I dreamed for them. I can contiune to guide them, but I cannot interfer in their lives once they are adults. All I can do is keep communications open with my sons, even if they do what I don't approve of and PRAY without CEASING.  There are so many Bible verses that offer comfort and strenght in time of trials -- God knew we would need these words -- in particular mothers -- and I think many a mother has read these verses late at night when their child has broken their hearts.

I will NEVER leave you, not FORESAKE you. (Heb 13:5)

No one said having children would be an easy ride. We all want to produce perfect children, ones that we can show others and say -- "look at how wonderful he or she is".  But sometimes we get a little cocky and discover a few home truths -- our children are not perfect and nor are we. Life sometimes takes a turn that we least expected.

I pray that your children don't do what I did, but they might, so TRUST in the LORD and HE will give you peace and comfort and all the strenght you need. And remember, no matter what your children do, LOVE THEM with all your heart.

Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.
 (1 Peter 5:7)

  2. It is so easy to worry over our children! I try to remember that I am "babysitting" them. They belong to the Lord and I try to just do for them what He wants me to.

When I lose sight of this, you can usually find me pulling out my hair in frustration or crying or fearful that something might happen to them.

    1. I don't think we ever loose the fear with "what might happen", we just need to keep it in perspective which can be hard at times. Being a mother was never meant to be a "walk in the park".

  4. Thank you for this wonderful blog. You write about 'something' us all touches as mothers, grandmothers. The quote/citat is wonderful and I look for that book. Maybe it's translated into my language? Thank you for this special blog.

  5. Beautiful advice for moms. realistic because we live in an imperfect world and all decisions will not be what we would like. But filled with hope because God's Word is true and our hearts can be encouraged, no matter our circumstance.
