What have I been reading?

Kim and Krickett Carpenter
Yes, still at home with plenty of time to read. Each afternoon, I grab a mug of tea and sit on my favourite couch (with Ruby the cat) or out in the sun with a good book and read for an hour or two.

Last week I finished reading "The Vow" by Kim and Krichitt Carpenter as recommended by my brother.  I thought I would read the book before watching the movie (I will get to that in a minute) and enjoyed it thoroughly. Whilst the book is not overly wordy, in fact I read it in a day - the Christian message is strong throughout but in particular the importances of the marriage vows and the promises a couple make (in the presences of God) on their wedding day about sticking together through sickness and in health - through the good and the bad.

Kim and Krickitt's vows were tested within the first few months of their marriage with a nasty car crash that nearly killed them both and resulted in a severe brain injury for Krickett.  Even though Krickett didn't even remember her husband or her marriage (15 months of memories wiped, never regained), Kim never contemplated divorce (which would have been an easy option) as strong Christians, they both knew all things were possible through Christ and with this faith they made it through this terrible ordeal.    It wasn't a smooth ride by any means, they weathered many a storm, but always with God by their side. It makes those little squabbles that married couples have seem like a walk in the park compare to what these two had to endure for so many months. Worth reading.

As you close the back cover to this book, I want you to remember that in life you will encounter some very tough times, but you can find your strength in God. If there is something missing in your life, seek the Lord. If you once had him in your life and now he seems far away, guess who moved?  He is still there; just go to Him. He loves you with an everlasting love, and through obedience to Him all commitments will endure.

To the movie . . .  its certainly wasn't the book (at all), the book carries a strong Christian message and that is very much lacking (non-existent - not even mentioned) in the film (I suppose to make it more appealing to a larger audience).  In fact the couple themselves were very disappointed at the lack of christianity in the movie as it was, and still is, such an fundamental part of their lives. If you want to watch a romantic film, then "The Vow" is just that.  Even the names are changed (Paige and Leo), the parents are quite horrible (whereas in real life they were very supportive) and the accident is completely different.  No, its not the book by a long shot which was disappointing as the message in the book was worth repeating in the film.

    1. Thankyou for letting me know about Les Mis coming out on film as I wasn't aware of it until you mentioned it. :)))) It will certainly be on my list of things to watch.

  2. I told you Jo, the movie borrows the central premise but that's it. Still it wasn't horrible, and it did make me stop and think about the circumstances -- enough to actually find out the real life story that inspired the movie.

    1. I quite enjoyed the movie (but not Paige's parents) but it was disappointing that it dropped all Christianity that was so important to the real couple.

  3. One to put on my list too :-) It can be disappointing when a movie does not live up to the good book it is based on.

    1. So many movies are a let down because they wander too far from the book. Often a mini series is better as it can be longer and devote more time to the story in the book.

  5. Sounds like a good one to put on my list. I think it's really sad they took the Christianity out of the film - that is disappointing (but typical in some ways, I guess).
