Easter eggs with a message

For the first time ever, the UK's biggest supermarkets are to stock a religious-themed Easter egg. For three years, customers have pestered stores and bishops written letters of endorsement to senior management. Now, for the first time, leading supermarkets Sainsbury's and Tesco will stock The Real Easter Egg, though stock levels will vary.

Launched in 2010, The Real Easter Egg is backed by church leaders. All the supermarkets turned down the idea at first, so The Meaningful Chocolate Company, which manufactures The Real Easter Egg, sold more than 250,000 Real Easter Eggs through mail order. The leading supermarket turn-around is therefore a milestone.

What do you think of this idea?

Whilst I don't think Easter eggs have any place in Easter, I do think that if one person reads the message and wants to find out more, then perhaps it is a good thing.

Out of 80 million eggs on sale in the UK, The Real Easter Egg is the first and only one to explain the religious significance of Easter on the box.

It is also a reminder to all those who gobble down chocolates during Easter that there is a reason behind Easter which is long forgotten (and it has nothing to do with chocolate, eggs, bunnies or public holidays).  I really don't know, but it feels like most of our younger generation wouldn't have a clue, its quite clear that their parents are teaching their children nothing biblical (they themselves know very little). It just might make a young person ask some questions.

  1. Yes, I saw this on FB a while ago & have mixed feelings about it. While I believe the whole Easter tradition is pagan anything that gets the gospel message to people who might otherwise not hear it has to be a good thing? I think my jury is still out on this one.

  2. I don't support the fact that all of the "Christian" celebrations/holidays have been turned into events that totally discredit what the true meaning is!
That said, I still celebrate both Easter and Christmas with my family - however we make sure that the true meaning is known and what is really celebrated. Our daughter is getting a bible bag for her Easter gift this year instead of chocolates!
I think that an egg that has the true meaning of Easter on it is such a FANTASTIC idea! Even for the people who walk past it in the shops and are reminded of the fact that there really is something here worth celebrating that isn't just food!
And as a Christian I think its so very very important that we do continue to celebrate Christian events, if we aren't showing people the true meaning then they will never know! I think to not celebrate them at all is just as 'pagan' as celebrating them for the wrong reasons!!! I celebrate my own birthday and my friends and family who are important to me- why not celebrate Jesus'!!!! And I remember the DOD of people who are special to me also - Jesus included!!!!

  3. I think it's a great idea Jo! We celebrate Easter and Christmas and try to use it as a means of getting the message of the gospel out.
