Missing cutlery

Photography by Joluise

The other day I replaced all our cutlery. I decided to buy a really nice set for my husband and I. We now have 8 forks, 8 knives, 8 dessert spoons, 8 soup spoons, 8 butter knives, 8 dessert forks and 8 teaspoons.  And I expect to keep all of these with none wandering off to who knows where.

Why did I replace our cutlery?

Do you have teenagers?

You may know the answer if you do.

We (and I recently discovered other families also have this problem) have lost bits and pieces of our cutlery.  Teenagers have a habit of using a spoon and for some strange reason it never makes it back to the kitchen. It is never seen again. I am assuming it goes to the same home that lost socks go to.

But now that my children have left home, the problems should stop - therefore the new cutlery.  I don't mind spending a little more knowing that each piece will be returned to their home at night without any problems.  None will be hidden under beds, found years later looking rather sad.

If you don't have teenagers, this is something to look forward to!!

  1. How nice. Mine are all mismatched. When I don't seem to have enough, I pick some out at the thrift store for a few cents. I love heavy cutlery.

    1. I had a very mismatched collection but when I saw this set on sale (by more than 50%) I decided it was time to go a little up market and spoil ourselves knowing that none of the pieces would be used for "other" uses!!

  2. I've been torn lately between rejoicing in my children growing up & leaving home to grieving it like a loss. Good to see some other positives can come out of it. I've found cutlery under beds in the past & my daughter would take a fork to work to eat her lunch & never bring it back! Some strange pieces have made their way into my mismatched collection, maybe we should get together!

    1. I am going to write a piece on empty-nesters as we are loving being in this group now and it would be interested to see how other couples feel. Our cats are thrilled as they are now the "children" and spoilt rotten!!!

  3. Don't have teenagers myself, but my mom had some pieces lost over the years. She got some new cutlery later on which I think stayed together a bit better. I think I've lost one fork since getting married, but I wonder if someone accidentally threw it in the trash with a paper plate.

My brothers had a bad habit of carrying cups, bowls and cutlery away to their computer desks and bed rooms when they had snacks. Finally my mom made a rule that if there were 8 (I think) dirty dishes/items in their rooms or on their desks they had to wash the dishes. It was a great motivator for them to bring stuff back, especially after it had been enforced once or twice. ;-) (My sister and I mostly took care of the dishes, but the guys had other chores that they helped out with.)

    1. Now that there is just 2 adults I do think our problem has come to an end, hence the new cutlery!! My husband isn't one for hiding it in strange places!!!

  4. My cutlery has been used for gardening & fishing ventures for years ~ which is why we no longer own steak knives or long pronged forks.

    1. Knives were also very handy to use as screw drivers bending them slightly so they didn't work quite as well for cutting food!

  5. I don't think we've lost any yet... I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
Your new cutlery looks very nice! :)

    1. Your children aren't quite old enough yet:)))) Its nice to use a set that has things like soup spoons and butter knives in, our other cheaper sets never had those additions. It was never any point spending too much when they simply went missing down the track!!

  6. Yep, know all about it beween teens, the fishing/gardening thing and the trove behind the lounge chairs. Perhaps one day we'll splash out on a matching set. Actually, we were given beautiful silver for our wedding which only gets used for special. Perhaps we'll use that more often in years to come.
