300 sandwiches

I am not sure if you read the story in the newspaper the other week about a young American woman making 300 sandwiches for her boyfriend. Here is a snippet:

One woman is using a tried and tested formula — food — to convince her boyfriend to put a ring on it.
Stephanie Smith, a reporter for The New York Post, started a blog documenting her quest to woo her boyfriend Eric with delicious bread and meat creations.  “Sandwiches are love,” he says. “Especially when you make them. You can’t get a sandwich with love from the deli.”
One lazy summer afternoon just over a year ago, I finally gave in. I assembled turkey and Swiss on toasted wheat bread. I spread Dijon mustard generously on both bread slices, and I made sure the lettuce was perfectly in line with the neatly stacked turkey slices.
Eric devoured the sandwich as if it were a five-star meal, diving in with large, eager bites. “Babes, this is delicious!” he exclaimed.
As he finished that last bite, he made an unexpected declaration of how much he loved me and that sandwich: “Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!”

As you can imagine this caused all sorts of comments from other women who thought it was so silly (and down right degrading) for a girl to do this sort of thing for their boyfriend - me, I think it's very sweet!

What do you make "for love" just because you husband loves it?

  1. Wow. My reaction was almost the opposite of yours, Jo: Ditch the boyfriend. That is dishonouring of him to her. He needs to be bribed into marriage? Wow. Get rid of him quick.

    1. I didn't see it as bribing and I didn't think he was a serious thing, perhaps it is, I don't know. If she is ok with it and they are having fun then I think it is harmless.

      have a lovely weekend.

    1. HI Roxy, one of the reasons for putting the word verification on was to put a stop to the 100s of spam messages I was getting which I think would again become a problem with comment moderation. Some weren't very pleasant and others were trying to sell every thing under the sun. Do you have trouble with spam? I will try it and see what happens.

I thought the 300 sandwiches was quite cute, I would perhaps wouldn't offer 300 different types, I don't think I could possibly come up with that many!!

  3. I didn't see this as being a negative thing..... I've done lots of things since I met Dan just because I love him - things I wouldn't normally do... Especially cooking foods I wouldn't eat. There's nothing wrong with having fun and occasionally make sacrifices or spoiling one another. I think it's good and keeps things fresh.

    1. I think if she is having fun (and it would appear that she is) and not doing it under duress (and stops whenever she has had enough) then it is harmless and romantic.
