What have I been wearing: All dotty about spots!

I love wearing spots which is good, as there is plenty of choice at the moment when it comes to spots. The skirt above it a very bright red covered in black spots - I feel like a lady bird when I wear it!! It is 100% polyester (2 layered) in that wonderful crinkle fabric, so no ironing required (perfect when traveling). I wore this to work on Friday and felt very smart with a black t-shirt and black sandals.  Not hard to miss!!
This isn't me!! It is from the Ezibuy catalogue.
A black and white spotty skirt I made earlier this year using cotton fabric. This is lovely in summer.
Another black and white spot skirt - this one is SO comfortable and flattering with its 6 gores.  Looks lovely with a a bright red top!
This is a lovely dress (sadly an iron is required!!) - bright and sunny for a summers day, great for a special occasion.

When I started this I didn't realise how many outfits I had that were spotty - I have another skirt (in navy blue with white spots) and two summer dresses, both blue and white. I don't think I really need anything else spotty in the cupboard!! I have enough to send me dotty!!

Are you a spotty girl?

Perhaps whilst reading this you were humming "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Bot Bikini" (written in 1962),  I was, which was funny as I wouldn't be seen dead in a bikini!! Did you know that Miss American was photographed in 1928 wearing a polka dot swimsuit and shortly afterwards Minnie Mouse started to wear a red polka dot dress and matching bow. By the 1930s dotty dresses were all the rage!!

And the word "polka" is derives from the Polish for "polish woman"! Polka is also a form of dance from central Europe.  I am not entirely sure how the word used for a style of dance and a Polish woman got connected to spots on a dress?!

    1. I always think there is something fun about spots!! Perhaps because I associate them with being a child!!

  2. No spots for me. ☺ But then I have no sense of style either so I'm no gauge!

  3. I love spots too - especially bright colours (like RED) with white spots. I actually don't own any spotty clothing myself... Maybe that's what I should sew myself first... something spotty? :D
Love your red clothing... And love red and black together - looks so smart... :)

  4. Love the snappiness of your spots. I like them but don't have any at present. When I was working I think I did have a blouse of two.
I think "polka dots" would come from the national dress of some of those countries that traditionally dance the polka.
You also look lovely and slender. I am a largish woman trying to embrace my shape and trying out some new styles. I love that you have made them. Very clever.

  5. Half of my closet is filled with Polka Dots ~ what we call it over here. A brown, a light blue, two black, and a navy.

  6. I like polka dots! They remind me of my Gramma. For some reason I don't tend to buy or sew things for myself with them, though. Maybe I need to think about adding some. :-)

I'm going to take a guess and say that possibly they are called polka dots because the Polish immigrant women in some area wore spotted head scarves or clothing.

    1. I went to buy a zip and cotton today and quickly checked out the fabric - there was a heap of spotty fabric in every different colour and size. I could wear spots every day!! You might be right with the immigrant women:)))
