Crying

There is nothing wrong with having a good cry.

I don't know a mother that hasn't shed many a tear for their children.

The bible has many example of crying (weeping) such as this one "A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance" (Ecclesiastes 3:4).  Weeping is perfectly normal and is something we will all do many many times in our lives.

Even Jesus wept

Certainly over the last few months I have shed many tears and I can guarantee that I will shed many more in my lifetime  Crying does make you feel better, even though at the time it doesn't always feel like it.

Find somewhere quiet and have a cry. It doesn't solve the problems you have but the Lord is sitting beside you, arms wrapped around you and will comfort you. You are never not alone in His presences.

So don't be afraid of crying and don't be embarrassed with sitting with someone who is crying - they need your comfort. Reaching out to those who are sad, or weary, or lonely will make such a difference to their day.

In a recent blog post, one of my readers (Clara) made a good suggestion - on those days that don't look that great, perhaps one that you have cried - write down in your journal something to be thankful for, a blessings that has occurred that day.  It's a reminder that no matter how bad a day can be, how many tears were shed - there is always something to be thankful for.  I am now doing this daily and it really does put life into perspective.

P.S. A hot cup of tea is perfect after a good cry!

Weeping may endure for a night,
but joy cometh in the morning.

Psalms 30:5

  1. Jo~ I like how you said weeping is normal and I also love the reminder that there is a time for it! So often we think weeping is not normal, we should avoid it and everything that causes it, but even Jesus was "a man of sorrows acquainted with grief." God bless you, friend, in your tears. A piece of chocolate is also quite nice after a good cry.

    1. Crying should be seen as completely normal and not to be hidden away - but some people are so uncomfortable when another person cries. I also think its important for children to understand that their parents do cry and its ok to show emotions (not that we want to worry them).

A cup of tea + chocolate is a perfect combination and cheers up anyone's day!!

      Have a lovely week ahead.

  3. I'm not afraid to cry, nor am I ashamed of tears. The Lord understands them, and King David wasn't afraid to cry either - he tells us that our tears go into a bottle God has stored up, and God records them in His book! Psalms 56:8 "Thou tellest my wanderings: put Thou my tears into Thy bottle: are they not in Thy book?" I think tears are very precious to the Lord because He knows our hearts and He knows our grief. Somehow just knowing that makes Him feel much closer to me.

Being thankful has really helped me a lot - and I try not to just think of something to be thankful for from the good parts of my day, but I try to think of something to be thankful for in the sad/bad thing that happened. For example, if I get a cold, I try to think of something to be thankful about the cold or about getting sick - it really stretches you, but if you search hard or think carefully about it, there's always something to be thankful for even if it's just that God has provided clean tissues to blow your nose with. :)

    1. I didn't see a lot of crying growing up - I thinks it was whole "got to hold it together" not wanting to show weakness which isn't a good idea at all. I am much more open about crying (I even cry when reading books or watching a sad movie!!).

Good idea about turning a bad day into a positive, I must try and do that more. It really is a great idea.

    2. yes, I cry when reading books or watching movies - and they can be sad OR happy and it still can make me cry - and I am a sympathetic crier sometimes too (even more so, the older I get), which means I cry even more often! The sympathetic crying can get a bit annoying, but I can't seem to help it! :/

    3. If someone tells me a sad story I will get tears in my eyes - which can be a little embarrassing!!

  4. It is so true; love the scriptures, and even just remembering that Jesus wept is very precious to me. God gave tears for a purpose, its good to let them do their work.
    Blessings,

    1. God gave us emotions, not to never show them, but to use them wisely and that includes tears. It was interesting to read the verses about weeping as it is mentioned quite a bit in the Bible, therefore it is something important.

      Have a lovely week ahead.

  5. Dearest Jo, I must say there are times when a good cry can heal our hearts, tears of repentance wash our burdens away. I think they can just help us release a bit of heaviness. As you said Mothers carry so many loved ones close to our hearts. I loved this post...
    We are free to cry!
Spring is officially here on Thursday, and Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
    Love, Roxy
