"Stay-at-home" holidays

This was posted on Facebook a few weeks ago and I really loved it. So many people I know take one or two vacations (holidays) per year and I often wonder when they spend any time at home (besides the usual weekends). I took three weeks leave in April and we didn't go away. It was funny because everyone asked me where we were going, I said "no where" and some found this a strange concept!

We stayed home partly because we didn't want to be any distances from our son who needs us at present, but because I wanted to spend time at home.

I had a lovely time.

I had a pile of books and DVDs from the library to work my way through, I had sewing I wanted to do and I wanted to just spend time with my husband.  I sat in the sunshine in the afternoons with my book, I sewed in the mornings, I slept in late and had breakfast in bed, we went for walks and stopped off for hot chocolates/coffee, went out for romantic lunches together, did some sightseeing, breakfast with my sons and DH and I watched DVDs in the evenings. It was all rather lovely.  Life was peaceful, relaxing, certainly not demanding, it didn't cost very much and by the end I felt completely refreshed! What more could I ask for, nothing.

On the upside of staying home is that you get to sleep in your own bed at night, you don't need to pack, there is no waiting at airports, you know you will always get great meals and the pets don't need to be carted off to boarding homes which they hate.

In saying all of this - I do love a good holiday and one day I will get to Paris and have the most wonderful time (a girl can dream). But that isn't going to happen any time soon so I will continue to enjoy my cheap and cheery "stay-at-home" holidays!!!

I think "stay-at-home" holidays are completely underrated and more people should take at least one or two!

  1. I agree so much. This was so well stated. Every once in a while, I feel I must get away, due to things I have no control over. Usually, though, I am quite pleased to have time at my home to spend as I wish without all the hassles of travel.

  4. Sometimes, all we really need is a little break in our routine; I love all that you did when you were home; delightful. I love to travel, but also love to stay home and do those special things. It used to be difficult to afford trips, and I always dreamed like you said.. these years, we have been more able to go; most of our trips involve visits to family; especially our kids. I long to be able to go on trips with our kids and grandkids…perhaps one day. I think it would be nice to visit Paris one day too. I was able to go when I was a teen ager. I loved it. Blessings to you, and I wanted to you to know that I am praying for your boy.

  5. A Great post - and a great idea. I did this for a good portion of my life - stay-cationing. I didn't take my first vacation away from home until 2000...and I'm no spring chicken!! LOL! Hubby and I love to take our 3 Pups with us...they never board anywhere. They come with us or we don't go. And, we usually go back to Wisconsin, where I have family. Have a Blessed Day ♥

  6. My husband and I live a long ways away from both my parents and his--so it seems lately most of our vacation time is purely spent traveling to visit them! But it is nice to have "rest time" at home!

    1. My family live in another state and most of my holidays are visiting them, we rarely go somewhere just for a holiday. One day perhaps.

    1. I think stay at home holidays are far less exhausting than traveling and I do like things that are calm and relaxing.

  8. I LOVE stay-at-home holidays - they are my favourites! I would rather stay home than go anywhere at all. Even when we do stay home, there's never enough time to do all the things I would like to do around here!!

  9. I love stay-cations too - nothing like coccooning at home esp in the cooler months! That said, I work from home so sometimes to have a REAL break, I do need to go somewhere else ...
