Art Friday: Paris

Rainy day in Paris - KJ Carr
Art Friday: Paris

If someone gave me a free ticket to anywhere in the world, I would go to Paris. One day perhaps.

Here are some interesting facts about Paris:

France is the most visited country in the world: 83 million tourists in 2012.

Paris was originally a Roman city called “Lutetia” and the Word “France” means “land of francs.” The Franks are Germanic tribes who lived in Northern Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire.

It took 666 years to build the Louvre.  It was originally built as a palace but is now the most visited art museum in the world.  It houses over 35 thousand works of art and would take ten months to look at every single item housed there.

The Catacombs were created about 200 years ago because the graveyards had become overcrowded and smelly.  The bones were all moved by cart at night after being blessed by a priest.

The Eiffel Tower is 276m high and was created by Alexandre Gustav Eiffel in 1889.  He is the same person who built the internal frame of the Statue of Liberty in 1885. When the Eiffel tower first went up, people mocked it and called it hideous but otherwise paid it no attention as it was meant to be taken down after the World Fair of 1889.  It is weird to think that in hot weather it can expand in height by as much as 6 inches without popping or breaking any of its two and a half million rivets.

Hope you enjoy todays art all about the streets of Paris.

Happy travelling!

    1. Thankyou Amy, had a lovely day, but glad tomorrow is Saturday and I can have a little sleeping!!

There are quite a few paintings of the french flower ladies and they are beautiful, however many of these women lived in poverty and only made a meagre living from flowers. Their stories are quite sad, which is perhaps why the woman in the painting looks a little sad.

      Have a wonderful weekend:)

  3. France has never really attracted me. I think if I could pick one place in Europe to visit, it would be either Switzerland or Germany. :) I love the one of the lady holding the basket of flowers - very pretty and feminine.
