Thoughtful Thursday: Roses

One rose says more than a dozen

Roses are one of my favourite flowers and I quite often have them in the house. They are beautiful, the often smell gorgeous and they look so perfect. I can't think of one reason to dislike a rose, even the thorns are bearable just to enjoy the beauty!!

Here is a collection of photos I have taken in recent years. The one above was taken at work at the entrance to our office. It was a huge display of red and pink roses picked by one of the ladies who works in the library from her neighbours garden.  Each week she bring in flowers and I have to say this was one of her best displays. She could do this professionally as she has a wonderful eye for colour and symmetry. Each time I walk past I stop and have a smell as these roses had a magical scent!

Her simple act of kindness (as she doesn't need to do this) bring joy and smiles to many faces each day and I often stop just to look.

A single rose of any color depicts utmost devotion.

Two roses entwined together communicate "Marry me".

Six Roses signify a need to be loved or cherished.

Eleven roses assure the recipient they are truly and deeply loved.

Thirteen roses indicate a secret admirer.
For some reason, what droplets on roses always makes them that little more beautiful!!
I found this rose hidden in my garden many years ago when we first moved in, I dug it up and moved it to a sunny spot, it has never grown very big, but always rewards me with a couple of perfect buds each year.

Yellow roses mean: Joy, Gladness, Friendship, Delight, Promise of a new beginning, Welcome Back, Remember Me,  Jealousy,  "I care". What an interesting combination!! I do love yellow roses.

Pink roses mean: Appreciation, "Thank you", Grace, Perfect Happiness, Admiration, Gentleness, "Please Believe Me"
Old books and roses, what more could you ask for!!

  1. Stunning images, I love roses too particularly in the morning when covered in dew. My daughter had roses included in the arrangements at her wedding, they were truly beautiful.

    1. I agree - I have been known to rush out with my camera first thing in the morning to catch those droplets. Roses and wedding go hand-in-hand.

  2. I love roses too - especially the ones I call the sunset kind - the ones that contain all the yellows, oranges and pinks of a pretty sunset. I also especially love pink roses and yellow roses. :)
    Beautiful photos, Jo! :)

  3. Roses are just so beautiful. I wish we could grow them more easily here. Some day, I hope to have a flower garden.

    1. Whilst I can grew them, I lost a number to drought conditions a few years back and a couple that were just very fussy. The ones left are hardy and seem to cope with anything, so I will stick with these few! My dad grew excellent roses and when I visited him last week his entire front garden was full of roses, it looked beautiful. He likes to take in a bunch of roses each week to the nursing home where mum is so she can enjoy them too.

    2. Jo, I think the idea that all roses are hard to grow has gotten into some people's thinking because of the ones that are fussy. I've had some duds, but also some real winners that just couldn't be stopped. Except by Texas. :-P Texas is not kind to roses, but there are still some that will grow here if they get the proper food and water. I don't think it's just the heat since they were fantastic in Arizona. I think it's at least partly the soil. The drought has been hard on a lot of things here the last few years.

    3. I have found the old fashion roses, the ones that have been around for decades are the best to grow - they seem to be the toughest and most resilient to bugs whereas the modern roses are often too delicate.
