Love these paintings, they are so homely and cosy and I am sure over the years, I have stepped into a few homes that look like these. Like many homes of the past, the kitchen (which was often large) was the room that many lived in almost all the time. It was the warmest room in the house over winter (and why burn another fire in the house when the kitchen fire did the trick - it saved on wood and coal) with the good light from the window, it was a perfect place for women to work on their sewing whilst they kept an eye on their dinner cooking.

I particular like the painting with the older woman still by the fire quilting. I almost want to reach in and sit in the chair opposite and hear her stories.

This is another favourite of mine, a very warm and cosy room.

    1. Those fires make the rooms so inviting. We have central heating and it just doesn't have the same feel as a fireplace !! and certainly not as romantic.

  3. Oooh, I like these VERY much! :) They are very cosy and warm. I love the glow of the fire in the one with the children playing on the floor in front of the fireplace. The ones of the women doing their handiwork makes me want to get my knitting or hand-stitching out and join them! :)

    1. They are so cosy and inviting. From these you can see why women stayed in the kitchen to do their work, what a lovely space to stay in on a cold wintry day.

  4. These are delightful--restful and appreciative of simple time at home, especially the presence of family elders. I especially like the woman feeding the chicks, the young woman by the fire, and the sewing mother with her son. Certainly a great expression of Finding Joy in the Everyday, which is a beautiful theme for a blog!

  6. What a cozy glimpse into the life of another time and world! I can't imagine having that much sewing to do, as I eyed their basket full of clothes needing to be mended. I loved the picture of the little boy and his grandpa or maybe dad playing a game together. Glimpses of a harder, but more simple lifestyle for sure! Thanks for sharing the pictures, I really enjoyed it!

    1. Whilst I enjoy sewing I really don't like mending at all, my husband wanted three things altered/mended and I really found ways to avoid them until my husband notices that I found time to sew but not mend!!!
