Random Tuesday #18 (Simplicity)

I spent part of my weekend going through my books and deciding what to keep and what to give to charity. I managed to cull four bags and my shelves are already looking/feeling lighter. Why keep books that I don't have plans to re-read and if I want to, I can simply borrow them from the library.  I am trying to buy less books and so far this year have only bought a few, almost every book I read comes from the library - they can store my "library" for me!!

I also went through my linen cupboard and toss out a pile of old sheets, towels and pillow cases that I haven't used in years (since the children were teenagers) and have no plans to use again. Once again, why keep if I am not going to use them. How many towels and sheets do a couple of two really need?!

Haven't got to the end of my clean-out, but on the road to simplicity!! I wouldn't fit into one of those tiny homes just yet, but trying to reduce "stuff" that is collecting dust and not being used.

Do you have trouble tossing things out?

  1. I've been working on it and it feels pretty good I have to say. When there is less clutter, it helps your soul breathe. I'm with you on the tiny home. I would have a lot more to get rid of to fit in there! Have a great week. Diane

    1. Couldn't agree more. I took some bags to the charity bin this afternoon and I really did feel so much better :) On Saturday I am taking the books to another charity who will sell them and make money for youth suffering depression. All in a good cause. You also have a lovely week:)

  2. There isn't much I can realistically get rid of, but as the children get older, the pile of stuff to get rid of will grow. Actually, I have just remembered, there is a huge pile of little girls' clothes that are ready for a new owner now! Yah!!!! Less clothes in the Princess' wardrobe!!! =)
If only the library would keep the books at the library instead of getting rid of them when they are deemed "too old"! Oh well, I guess there are always more books...
    love,

    1. How often to you read the same book (excluding Christian literature) - at present I rarely ever read the same book twice as I have such a huge pile of "to-reads" that I don't have time to revisit read books!! My library is pretty good when it comes to books and yet to find one disappear on me (however CDs certainly do). I do accumulate during the year and find the need to do a cull, mine aren't always large, but regular.

  3. I too am in the process of having a good sort out with the intention of doing a few car boot sales and sending some to charity shops.

    1. Doesn't it feel good to free yourself of all these things!!!

  4. I do find it hard to get rid of things - too many experiences of getting rid of things and then regretting it. However, I do try to get rid of rubbish and not hoard it! There's enough good things to keep without keeping rubbish as well!!! ;) Books are one thing I just can't get rid of at this stage in my life - I have growing children who will read things over and over, so all those books are or will get a lot of use yet! :) But I do like simplifying things and sometimes just organising things or finding a way to store things properly can feel really good because it reduces "piles" of things hanging around the house...

    1. Perhaps as the children grow into adulthood and have their own homes you will move some of your books to them which is what i did. I also gave some of the children's books to other families with children (the ones mine didn't want) and I knew they would be much loved and continue to be used.

  5. I discovered recently that our library either doesn't replace books that aren't returned, or just gets rid of them if they have decided they are not current enough. In the past, I used to check out various Gladys Taber books every year or so. The last time I was in the mood to read Gladys Taber they no longer had them at any of our library branches. Very careful consideration will be needed if I decide to get rid of any of our books.

When the weather here gets too hot to be outside, I plan staying in and clearing out all of the old clothes that I have kept for no good reason.

    1. I haven't experienced that problem with our library. I do buy books that I think I will use a lot (i.e. in my blog as research) or want to revisit - I think they are the valuable ones and are unlikely to sit and collect dust. They are also the ones I am more likely to lend to other ladies who will also find them useful. Our library network is very good and I rarely have trouble finding what I want, I am always very impressed with the service I get.

      Have a wonderful weekend:)
