Dressing elegantly but modestly

If I had to name two famous women who dress modesty but elegantly, it would have to be Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge and Australian born, Princess Mary of Denmark. Two women who will one day become Queens.

Whilst none of us can afford the wardrobes of these women (or the volume of clothes they own!) but we can get lots of ideas by looking at the clothes they wear.

Their clothes are timeless, some of these outfits would have looked just as elegant in the 1960s as they do today and these dresses could be worn in 10 years time and still look as beautiful and as graceful as they do now.  It means we don't need to have a wardrobe filled with all the latest fashions (that we need to keep changing) if we stick to classic designs.

These ladies don't only look graceful in their clothing, the way their carry themselves is one of grace and elegance.

The designs are simple, nothing overly complicated. In fact many of these dresses aren't impossible to make yourself. I like simple!!

The designs are modest but still remain elegant and feminine (not one looks like a sack!).  There is not low gapping neckings, knee length hems (or close too) and hang in such a way that isn't overly revealing. Each outfit suits their build, if you have big hips, dress to not emphasis the hips, likewise a large bust can look much larger and less modest it squeezed into a small top.

Colours are kept simple, many of Kate's outfits are a single colour — one not is bombarded with mix-matched colours and shades. Colours suit their complexions.

The clothing worn by these two women are always feminine, even their casual clothing looks feminine. These women look like ladies in their outfits and we can to, even on much smaller budgets.

Jewellery is tasteful, often small and limited — whilst these women have lots of jewels of great value, they often wear something small and very tasteful.  A simple pair of earrings, a brochure, a pretty necklace can finish off an outfit and bring everything together.

Hair is beautifully presented and adds to the elegant and timeless look.  Interestedly, both have kept their hair long (Mary is 43, the age when many women start to cut it short). It is glossy and looks very healthy. They probably have people who do their hair, but that should not stop us from taking good care of our hair. Cutting off those split ends does make a big differences and finding a style that suits your face adds to the elegant look. And a good brush makes all the differences. Even if you are at home all day, hair done makes a lady feel so much better.

Makeup is conservative and simple — both ladies wears only enough to enhance their looks, keeping it light and natural.

What I find interesting is that their shoes are classic and can go with many outfits meaning that you don't need to have a huge collection of shoes (its true ladies!!) to look dressy and elegant. Often the Duchess of Cambridge wears the same "nude" shoes with many different outfits.

Whilst these ladies are always in the spotlight with a camera or three on them all the time — they have beautiful smiles and so must we. A happy smiling face creates beautiful lines when older, glum and gloomy faces create sad and weary lines — so remember, don't forget the smile when you get dressed in the morning as it finishes off every outfit and it is free!!

I do hope this gives you some ideas for dressing elegantly, feminine and modestly. Whilst these dresses aren't for "around the home", why not dress up a little for going out to the shops or to church.  But as someone once said to me, why not dress up at home — your family is just as important as the people at church!

  4. I love Princess Kate and one my favorite things about her is that she always looks stylish, never frumpy, and elegant. I think sometimes people hear modest and they think frump, but these two ladies are perfect examples that modest DOES NOT mean frump. Thank you for highlighting true ladies and true fashion icons!

    1. These are great examples of what modest looks like and I agree with you - no FRUMPY anywhere!!! Modest doesn't mean being covered from head to toe and wearing a sack - these dresses are just beautiful and modest!!

  6. Yes, they do look elegant, and it's refreshing to see clothes that cover ladies bodies. Some of the skirts are a little shorter than I personally prefer, but even then they are a LOT better than the mini mini skirts some females wear!! I love the fact that these two women look so feminine, as well as beautiful.

    1. I have noticed that the Duchess of Cambridge's skirt lengths have slowly dropped over the last few years - perhaps a quiet word from the Queen has been the reason! What some women don't appear to realise, when you sit, the length of skirt gets even shorter and shows FAR more than when standing!!!

  8. I love these two women - elegant, charming, graceful and modest - well except for the times Kate's been snapped sunbathing topless - but hey, in private with your own husband, why not!

  9. I absolutely love your post. There is a lot we can learn about modesty and decency from the way they dress. Someone said we are addressed b y how we dress. That means your dress shouts out who you are before anyone can have a chance to know you. Stopped by from Good morning mondays. Matilda

    1. Thanks heaps Matilda,

I couldn't agree about the way we are treated is based on the way we dress - it shows that you have put effort into your outfit, care about your appearance and don't want to offend others. Thanks for visiting :))

  10. I decided this past year I would do something about my youngest daughter's clothes. She is now 4 and I make all her clothes myself. I was sick of all the dresses being designed to be worn above the knee. I make her dresses that are still practical but more modest- they have to be just below the knee (or longer) or they have to have matching pants- (not leggings.) to wear under the dress. Leggings are fine under dresses but never worn on their own instead of pants. My daughter has short arms and legs in relation to her torso so just buying a bigger size to get the length never worked. She loves all her home made clothes- she particularly loves picking out her own fabric.
I used to make church dresses for my older daughter but she didn't appreciate it as much as her best friend who I have made many dresses for over the years and as a teen still appreciates that I taught her to sew her own clothes.
If you can sew I encourage you to do so and if your own children don't appreciate it then sew for other people's kids who do.
I'm thrilled there are other people who dress modestly and dress their children modestly too. My oldest daughter although she now wears skinny jeans sometimes she never wears low cut tops and often wears long flowery dresses. She works part time at our church.

    1. There is nothing more sweet than a little girl in a feminine dress, sadly it isn't something you see very often these days, rather it has been replaced by Ts and leggings that might appear to be practical, but they look so unattractive on little girls.
