The 1950s kitchen

Dear Blogging friends and family,

Welcome to Tuesday (if you are in Australia, or Monday for those elsewhere),

A little bit of fun to brighten up your day (!!)

After sharing with you last week the pink bathroom, I though it would be fun to visit some 1950's kitchens and yes, I was able to locate a few pink ones plus yellow, green, blue and white!! Colour, or more correctly the pastels was very fashionable in the 1950s. They make our modern kitchens look rather lacking in character.

What do you think? — fan or not?

Women of the 1950s were so proud of their new kitchens. They had come out of the war years and wanted something bright, new, slick and "advanced" and they were compared to kitchens of previous decades. They came with all the mod-cons and made cooking easier than ever and I can imagine women eager to cook in them.

Whilst I wouldn't want a 1950s style kitchen in my own house, they do bring back sweet memories of my childhood as I can remember going into older homes and seeing kitchens just like these.

What colour is your favourite? I quite like the pale yellow or the blue (quite calming) — pink is just not quite the right colour for cooking and green is too hospital looking to me!!

What colour is your current kitchen - mine is blue and white and red appliances.

Have a fabulous day dear friends and I will chat with you tomorrow.

Finding joy (its not hard to find)

xxxx

This bright yellow would be far too hard first thing in the morning - I would certainly wake up with a shock!!

  1. What a fun post! I love seeing all the old kitchens! As a side note...I grew up with a carpeted kitchen. Of course it seemed perfectly normal growing up because that's all I knew, but looking back, I am so grossed out! (I hope I'm not offending somebody with a carpeted kitchen!! If so, please forgive me!! :) ) With all the spilling that goes on--at least in my house now--I just can't imagine it! I don't see carpet in any of these pictures, so I wonder if that was popular in the 70's or just a preference of my parents. (I actually currently have carpet in my bathroom, which I think is kind of gross, too, but not as bad as a kitchen.) My current kitchen has buff walls, brown cabinets/shelving, hardwoods and granite counters. I love to decorate in neutrals with a just a touch of color here and there.

    1. Guess what - i grew up in a house with carpet in the kitchen and i can remember my parents putting it down when I was young. It was a special nylon that was easier to clean than normal carpet - but I see where you are coming from !!!! I would never put it in my kitchen now - imagine the grease build-up :))

  2. I couldn't really do a pastel kitchen. I think the pale yellow one is really pretty, but yellow is not a color that I look good next to! My kitchen has tan walls, brown wood cabinets on top, black cabinets on the bottom and silver appliances. The stainless steel appliance are the thing right now, but frankly they are driving me crazy! I can't seem to get and/or keep them clean-looking. It actually looks better than it sounds, but my dream kitchen would be a wood "mountain lodge" look with new vintage-styled appliances in red.

    1. We have stainless steel splash back behind the hotplates and the grease on it drives my husband spare and he is always cleaning it - i couldn't imagine it on appliances (but everyone seems to want it these days). I have off white cupboards and they drive me made - trying to keep them clean when a 23 year old son likes to cook and fling food all over the place is a nightmare :)))

All the appliances I have bought (stand master etc..) are red and I love those splashes of colour in my kitchen.

  5. My kitchen cabinets look just like that yellow kitchen. We are getting ready to paint it white on top and red on the bottom. We just had a few more cabinets added to the backside of the kitchen. We are super excited about it.

    1. So glad you enjoyed these - didn't these kitchens have so much more personality compared to our modern kitchens that sometimes are so stream line that they lack warm and that homey feel.

  8. I like the pink, when my parents bought their first house, they have to choose the color of their kitchen, at to our dismay they choose olive green. We the kids were in love with the pink samples they shows us. So sad, but I love a pink kitchen or bathroom.

  10. I definitely could not do yellow or pink. The pink is to reminding of pepto bismal! I love the blue and aqua. As I do not remember and 1950's kitchens I do love the elegance they represented.

    1. I think modern kitchens are very streamline but lack any elegance or warmth to them. Character lacking!!

  13. I agree with you - no pink, gaudy yellow or green kitchens for me! I quite like the pastel blue and yellow one. Mine is blue and white, as you know, and I have lots of red accents in my pantry (Tupperware lids and a red kitchenaid processor). I remember green in our kitchen growing up - ewwww!! ;)
