A favourite place to sit in silences

I think it is important for each of us to have a favourite place (or two) that we can go to when we need calmness, peace, quiet or just a place to think and dream.

Women are not machines. We are human and need, like anyone else, a place to recharge our batteries.

We cannot constantly please others, be a help-mate to our husbands, clean our home, produce food for dinner, keep the pantry stocked, provide advice, give love and hugs and lots lots more without taking care of ourselves.

We need a place where we can sit and quietly recover . . . I know some women are against "me time", perhaps because of the word "me", but I am strong believer that as humans we all need time out during our day. This time out not only allows us to catch our breath but it also allows our bodies to have some calmness and we all need that in the hustle and bustle of life.

I have several spots where I love to sit — in the warmer months I like to sit in the garden on this bench (often joined by Charlie Cat who also loves to sit quietly).  This is a very calm place to be with the dappled shade and greens of the garden. However in winter, it isn't quite as nice to sit outdoors so I like to sit at my round table (above) and look out of the window or in my armchair in the study (Ruby's favourite quiet place).

Your place of rest doesn't need to be fancy but it does need to be comfortable. It needs to be a place where you feel very comfortable and "at home".  In saying this, favourite places can also be away from home — perhaps along a favourite walking path, near a park or by a steam. Each of us will have our own favourite place that meets our needs and they will vary from person to person. What is important is that we each have a place to go to during the day. A place where we can sit awhile and think, perhaps with a cup tea and a book.

If you don't have a special place, why not think about find one in your home as you will certainly benefit from siting awhile alone.

I love to sit in silence
Beneath the shady trees
And listen to the song of birds
And to the buzz of bees.

I love to sit in silence
And watch the clouds roll by
Then read a book or sing a song
And hear the wild bird cry.

I love to sit in silence
When the day is almost done
And see behind the distant hill

The paint glow of the sun.

I love to sit in silence.

  2. I've just found your blog via a google search for images by the fire (it's so cold here today!) which took me to a lovely past post of yours. You have a beautiful blog. It's so nice to have a quiet place to sit, and keeping company with a dog or a cat enhances that.

  3. A lovely message in this post, and so very true. I have a special place in our living room where I keep my Bible, have a place for a hot cup of coffee/tea, and it is my quiet space where the Lord and I meet, and where I sit during the day for a bit of a time to rest. In the winter.. I am here more often, in the summer... my quiet moments are more often spent in my garden :) I love this post... filled with beautiful gentle wisdom! :)

    1. Isn't lovely to have one place where you can keep your bits and pieces and sit quietly and read - my mother always had a spot in our family home and next to her chair she had a basket full of things that she might need. Everyone knew it was her spot!!

Thankyou for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful day. :)

  4. So true. If we don't fill ourselves up, we have nothing to give to others. Love your quiet places.

  5. Lovely post! Thanks for sharing! Visiting you from the Strangers & Pilgrims link up. I need a peaceful place in my backyard. I do have quiet moments on my back porch, but there is quite a bit of traffic from the children sometimes.;) I also use my prayer bench in my room in early mornings.

  6. Your places of silence are just lovely. I could feel the peace through the pictures.

I have always been someone who like to just sit in silence and take everything in. I had never read that poem before, but it articulated beautifully everything I've ever felt when sitting in silence.

I felt like I was just on a mini-vacation visiting here today. :-)

    Thanks!

  7. I have two swings, one in the front yard and one in the back yard. I love to sit and swing and read during the summer. Right now they are both buried in snow. I hope you can stop by:

  9. I don't have any place like this in our home, but when I go shopping alone, I use the driving time as my quiet time. I also enjoy spending time reading the Scriptures and praying in bed each morning before the bustle of the day, and sometimes I sit up in bed prior to sleeping at night and do some quiet reading.
Anyway, I hate the "me time" thing, however there is a Scriptural basis for going apart - the Lord gave the example Himself when He would go to the mountain or a desert place to spend time with God, or when He got into a ship and departed from the crowds with just His few chosen ones. The Scriptures speak of being still and peaceful and such, and I think that's because the Lord knows of our need to be quiet and recharge (especially in communion with Him - I'm sure that's His favourite way for us to have quiet times and recharge!).

    1. Maybe as your work on your garden you could add a little corner where you can place a bench as a place for quiet reflection. As the garden grows this place will become more private and special.
