My thoughts for May: Eat real food

My thoughts for the coming month

Caring for our homes and our family is REAL work and don't let anyone tell you it isn't. In fact, not only is it real it is important and necessary. It is so important, the bible makes very special mention of it in more than one location. In Titus, older women are to encourage younger women to take care of their husbands, children and their homes and in Proverbs we women are given a beautiful example of a woman caring for her family and home.

The days are getting colder and winter is approaching. This is the time of the year I start to surprise my husband with roast dinners (sometimes in the middle of the week when he least expects it) as there is nothing nicer than the smell of a roast cooking in the oven. It is the smell of cosiness and home and tells him I love him.  He loves a roast and I am happy to make them for him during the winter months. I also like to surprise him with a yummy dessert — peach cobbler or a berry crumble. Homemade cooking isn't difficult and whilst it can take a little longer than buying ready made — it is so much nicer for your family, healthier and is a wonderful sign to them that you love them dearly and willing to put in the extra time and effort.

For those heading into summer, why not surprise your husband and family with a picnic in the garden or visit a local park. These little moments will be treasured by your family and meant the world to them.

Quote of the month

We have so much variety when it comes to fresh food — God has truely provided us with a treasure chest full of food, but sadly too many people reach for the ready-make, the heavily processed because it is "easier" and quicker. That may be the case, but it's taste is questionable, its very high in salt, sugar and other unpronounceable names making it bad for our health plus it is expensive. Skip the processed foods and trying cooking food made from scratch this month — instead of buying a pasta sauce, make your own — your family will really appreciate the effort you put into it and it will taste so much better.

“Don’t eat anything incapable of rotting.”
“Don’t eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.”

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

Quote by Michael Pollan

Bible verse for the coming month

And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Genesis 1:29-31

Hymn for the coming month

~ Just as I am ~

by Charlotte Elliott

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bid’st me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come! I come!

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot;
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt;
Fightings within, and fears without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind;
Yes, all I need, in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,

O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

  3. My Dr. told me today the very same thing, eat plants, a lot of greens! Let's see how we do.
    You bet I'm going to eat more greens.
    Say, thanks for thinking us in the other hemisphere.

    1. We have upped our greens (vegetables generally) and decreased the amount of meat we eat - I think its a better way of eating and I do feel much better as a result. :)

  4. Love the idea of having a quote/verse/hymn for the month! What a great way to center your thoughts on the important things of life. (And I thoroughly enjoyed Michael Pollan's book - it's great to re-read when I find myself getting off track with our food choices.)

    1. I have been enjoying these monthly posts and its fun to look for something to have as my verses or hymn for the month :) "Just as I am" is one of my most favourite hymns - I do prefer the older ones.

      I have only recently discovered Cooked by Micharl Pollan and we watched his series on Netflix, it was so interesting and informative. Puts you off eating junk and really motivates you to go healthy!!

  6. Yes. I don't understand why people eat processed food all the time - I MUCH prefer making things from scratch - it is so interesting to taste the many different flavours and ways foods can be prepared - and sit's o much more healthy! There's also a sense of satisfaction in making food from scratch that just isn't there when you use packet mixes and such.

    1. I have been watching a show called "Amercia's Worst Cooks" and the participants are all adults - quite bright adults (most of them) and they were asked about where cheese came from - how it was made, not a clue. They were also having to cut up potatoes - one lady said, why put in all the effort when it was quicker to go to the shop. I think too many people have forgotten that homemade always tastes better, its cheaper and its better for you . It's almost as if we have to start from scratch again and teach adults about food.
