Do you have a teachable heart?

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. (Proverbs 9:9)

Teachable: capable of being taught and willing to learn.

Do you have a teachable heart?

Do you still need many more lessons?

Do your solicit and welcome council from others?

Do you have people around you that will speak the truth to you?

Are you easy to correct and change your ways?

I am not perfect, I am a Christian that stumbles and falls and in desperate need of God. I need Him daily, something minute by minute. I make mistakes and I cry out for help . . . I have much to learn and grow as a Christian.

I doubt there are any Christians that would say they are perfect, because none of us are. And if they say they are a model Christian I would have to wonder why they have reached that conclusion.

We all have room to improve—we all have things to learn and we all imperfect.

However, it can be very hard to admit we still need more lessons and it can be very hard to accept criticism from others or have a mirror held up to us. Most of us struggle when others point out our faults and we perceive these comments as intrusions into our lives. We tend to typically assume we are right and others are wrong

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise. (Proverbs 12:15)

However it is always worth listening to advice especially from our closest and trusted friends (those who have our best welfare at heart), because we aren't always right (amazing but true!!). How many of you get stressed or anxious, get angry far too quickly, not organised enough, struggle with contentment, hooked on social media, problems with finances, submission, find it difficult to manage the housework, over stretched, not enough time for bible reading, finding the children difficult, homeschooling getting you down — these are just a few examples of things that can be improved upon and things we can learn from others.

We can learn the hard way through painful and personal experiences or we can learn from those who have travelled the same path and know the pitfalls. A wise man (or woman) will want to learn and will be willing and happy to have their faults pointed out to them. And a dear friend will do so in such a way that isn't hurtful or nasty rather in love and friendship. And a loving husband will be tender and caring in his discussions with his wife and not make her feel stupid or inferior.

Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. (Proverbs 9:8)

Lets open our hearts to learning and be happy to listen and accept that there are many areas in our lives that need attention. Let us pray to our Heavenly Father — and ask Him to give us a Teachable Heart! Remember, we are all works in progress.

Speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ (Ephesians 4:15)

  2. Dearest Jo,
Life is teaching us new things in so many ways every day, the fact is to be able and understand what the Lord wants us to learn and to learn them ... I think that we have to be gifted with a sensitive soul and a delicate heart, because all life long we may have the chance to grow our knowledge.

Thank you for this so inspiring post, sweet friend, God Bless !

  6. This is a really tough one for most people - we are often very proud people. So important to be humble, teachable, sensitive, gentle, meek... All these go hand-in-hand and were exemplified for us by the Lord Jesus Himself - the Scriptures tell us He only did and said what His Father told Him to - He was used to being directed! :) This is a great reminder, thank you so much, Jo! x

    1. I wrote this after reading some blogs where the authors were so certain they were 100% right and everyone else were wrong. One woman certainly didn't have a teachable heart because she believed she was completely right and none of us are only God is.
