Part 7: Working christian women: what to wear?
Part 7: What am I going to wear to work?
In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing (1 Timothy 2:9)
Whether at home, visiting friends, going to a party or going off to work — we need to wear clothes that reflect our Christian life. This post is as relevant to a stay-at-home mum to one that works.
As Christian working women we must not ignore the fact that the clothes we wear contribute to the impression others have of us. If we wear revealing clothes, short skirts, tight outfits etc.. and at the same time call ourselves Christian, what message are we sending our workmates. Something very confusing.
We are carrying the reputation of Jesus Christ with us, so it is important that our personal appearance never hinders our witness. Whilst it is important to be smartly dressed at work (or if we are going off to church) we need to make sure that we are not standing out as a fashion plate.
If you are the type of woman who loves to follow the latest styles it will give others the impression that you spend lots of money on clothes just to keep up with the latest trends. It is better to stick to a classic look that doesn't date and your clothes can be worn for a number of years both saving you money but still looking very professional. This style tends to be much cheaper and you will only need to add a few bits and pieces each year without looking like you spend a fortune on clothes.
What you wear also needs to be comfortable. If you are not comfortable and find yourself constantly checking the hem of the dress or needing to run to the ladies room to try and make improvements—not only is it a time waster, it also shows that you have become a little self-absorbed in your clothing.
I like to add accessories to my outfits—necklace, earrings, perhaps a bracelet, brooch or scarf. I tend to buy these things at markets, on eBay or when on sale to keep the prices low. Only this weekend I picked up a beautiful peacock blue pashmina for only a few dollars from a charity store which will be excellent at work to both jazz up an ordinary top and keep me warm with its cashmere wool. Over time I have built up quite an collect from classic to funky that will go with much of my outfits. It means I can wear the same old top over and over again with different accessories and feel like a different outfit. I love wearing pearls — a very classical look on any outfit. So, even if your clothes are a little old, add a splash of colour with a cheery scarf or brooch.
If you are unsure about your outfit, ask your husband and he will give you an honest response.

Whatever you wear to work, make sure the message you are sending out is one of modesty and Godliness. Do think about the length, the tightness, the revealing nature of the outfit—and avoid getting swept up in the world's fashions standards.
I like your examples and the idea of classic mix and match!
ReplyDeleteThankyou :) Of course if you wear an uniform, what you wear really isn't that flexible!! However, i work in an office so these examples work well for me.
DeleteI think young girls would be surprised, truly surprised if they realised the impression they give by what they wear. Most people don't seem to think about what impression clothes give...
ReplyDeleteI have walked behind many young women wearing short skirts/dresses and very high heels. The one thing you notice is the tugging of their skirts trying to make them more acceptable. I just wonder why they put the outfit on if they knew it was really to short for the office. The heels often make them walk quite oddly and you can really see their ankles do strange bends. I agree, people don't seem to know what impression they make.
DeleteGreat choices... a woman can look great... yet still be modest....
ReplyDeleteAnd you can look great and still spend very little!!!
DeleteI no longer work outside the home but I love skirts and dresses here in the Summer. Very cute choices!
ReplyDeleteSo do I, have started to buy more summer dresses as I think they are so feminine
DeleteI love the outfits you have here! I wish some of the young girls I work with would read this post!
ReplyDeleteYoung girls sadly don't always listen to advice from older women :(
