There is a lot wrong with porn

Yet when men are caught looking at their favoured sexual material - pictures rather than words - that's somehow very different. Men who use porn are disgusting, perverted, their filthy smut a danger to marriage and sure sign of an addled male brain. . . . While women are allowed, indeed are encouraged, to blatantly enjoy their porn in the most public of settings, most men have no choice but to view their erotic material in secret, knowing full well the reaction from many of their partners if they are caught. The women's magazines regularly run articles discussing in solemn tones women's feelings of betrayal when they discover their partners using porn.  Bettina Arnht (source)

I have written a number of stories on “mummy porn” in the last few months and I really wanted to share this quote by Bettina Arndt because I think it is so true. Whilst society frowns upon men who look at porn and quick to blame men for the collapse of marriages, women are openly reading  porn and it is seen by many as completely acceptable. It isn’t. When women read porn it is seen as “fun, harmless, even liberating”,  so why is it seen so differently when men look at porn?

Porn is porn, no matter if it is read or viewed.

In fact I would argue that when you "read" porn, the author wants you to imagine what is going on by using far more explicit words and descriptions, than what men look at in a magazine (generally a naked woman).  Women's porn is far more erotic in many ways and perhaps more dangerous because of the language used.

Basically, it has nothing to do with love, caring, trust or tenderness and it adds nothing to a marriage, even though many believe it can spice up a marriage. Stay clear of women's porn, it is easy to fall into the trap - what harm can come from reading a romance novel?

SAN FRANCISCO: On a recent morning at the main public library here, dozens of people sat and stood at computers, searching job-hunting sites, playing games, watching music videos. And some looked at naked pictures of men and women in full view of passers-by.

The library has been stung by complaints about the content, including explicit pornography, that some people watch in front of others. To address the issue, the library over the last six weeks has installed 18 computer monitors with plastic hoods so that only the person using the computer can see what is on the screen.

"It's for their privacy, and for ours," said Michelle Jeffers, the library spokeswoman. The library will also soon post warnings on the screens of all its 240 computers to remind people to be sensitive to other patrons - a solution it prefers to filtering or censoring images.

This is the sad fact about porn - a growing number of our society believe it is acceptable to view porn in public places even though it may offend others. We are yet to get this bad in Australia, but this is a glimpse of what might head our way. However with technology such as the smart phone and tablet (eg iPad) people can now view porn anywhere at any time . . . on a bus . . .  in a plane (as described below) and those sitting around really can't do anything about it (complaining won't put a stop to it) except walk way (if you can) or look the other way.  But what of children and young adults, they also will need to be taught to walk away.

Christi Chidester, 32, who works in communications for a federal agency in San Francisco, was in the main library here recently when she walked past someone watching hard-core pornography. She complained to the librarian and was told there was nothing that could be done.

Chidester said she has since spent a lot of time thinking about the issue, and while she wishes the library would create specific zones or rooms for those internet users, she now likens seeing pornography on someone else's screen to hearing someone curse in public. It's going to happen sometimes.

Others fiercely defend the rights of people to watch whatever they want in public. When Hawkins, from Morality in Media, posted a YouTtube video describing her encounter on Delta, she was bombarded with angry emails from people telling her to mind her own business.

"People said, 'just look away,"' she recalled. "Their argument is that people can do what they want."

Unfortunately, the more society is exposed to porn, the more acceptable it will become. Little by little it will start to seep into the fabric of our lives and we need to find ways of dealing it, one way is know what is going on around us.

People really don't care but we need to.

  3. Hi Joluise,
I agree with what you are saying about this subject. Viewing in public should be stopped.
I would like to see porn disappear completely.
I don't think there is any reason for it to exist at all.
    God Bless

    1. I was very surprised at the public libraries in the USA and the problems they are facing, I hadn't even though of this being an issue until I read about it. How sick can a person be to think that looking at porn in public was ok. I just shake my head in wonder some times :(

  4. Sigh...and like swearing it is becoming increasingly acceptable. Good post, bad subject :-)

    1. Did you read the newspaper article about swearing at work - someone got sacked for swearing but the court said it wasn't grounds for a sacking because swearing is now common place in Australia. Fortunately wherever I have worked, swearing is very uncommon and if someone does, they usually apologies start away. But just sit on a bus and its scary what you hear, in particular from young people.

  5. In my country during the communist period porn was officially banned. It existed only in underground, but even in this case it was rare. After downfall of communism we have increasing problem with that - a lot of young people become addicted from porn, especially from Internet. Sometimes I think that idea from past period was really good...

  6. Two points: Firstly why is it acceptable that our children should be inadvertently exposed to this because adults, childishly & selfishly, refuse to give up their *rights* & secondly we have an epidemic because the last lot of stats I saw for America showed women have nearly as big a problem as men when it comes to watching porn. Unfortunately, like any other addiction, people are incapable of helping themselves & so the rest of us also suffer.

  8. I guess the more the salt (Christians) lose their "savour", the worse sin will be. Sadly, not many will speak up against something like this. And of course it is true that the heart is desperately wicked, and people are extremely selfish, so things are really only ever going to get worse - we can't really expect it to get any better this side of the millenium. It's disgusting, and it's terrible. All the more reason to teach our children to turn away from evil - they certainly won't be able to keep from seeing it forever, as they grow older. If they know what is good and what is evil, it will help them more than anything, I guess.

  9. They are both equally destructive and sinful. I can't believe the article in San Francisco--our local library here won't allow the users of the computers to look at porn, thankfully. All in the name of "not censoring". Ridiculous.

Yes, indeed, we must care, and stand up for what is right, and teach our children what is right.

  10. One thing to remember in regards to San Francisco is that it is one of the most degenerate cities in the U.S. and has had a long history of being strange. Things have been done there in public that are too perverse to even discuss in print.

Having said that, though, the rate at which this country is tolerating perverse, bizarre and deviant behavior is highly disturbing. Not only is it tolerated, but approved and, all too often, pushed forcefully. Yet, they have taught the children in the schools for years now that they are nothing but animals. They believed it, so no wonder that they are acting this out.

Romans 3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

    1. Yes I had heard this and how sad. We are tolerating more and more behaviours, but in other ways we don't tolerate things like smacking children as that is seen as really bad. My son (who is only 24) was commenting on the number of children at the shopping centre who were being silly and didn't seem to know how to behave in public - he said a good smacking was what they needed! He probably wasn't far from the truth.
