How about a pink bathroom?

I have just learned that the pink bathroom is making a revival
returning to the popular colour of the 1950s.

What do you think?

Would you like a pink bathroom? Or do you already have a pink bathroom?

Pink bathrooms were VERY popular in the 1950s, it was considered the in-look — the must have! The one everyone wanted.

Millions of pink bathrooms were built in the USA and Australia but it didn't last, by the 1960's it all started to fade as bathroom designs altered.

Not only were pink bathrooms popular, some ladies also liked pink kitchens too - now, that would be too much for me. What do you think?

Whilst I don't like every sort of pink bathroom, I do think the examples above and below. Both are tasteful, feminine and not too "pretty" — one does need to consider the males who might use these rooms too.

Whilst I was doing "research" into pink bathrooms (to save you all the time) I discovered a blog called "Save the Pink Bathroom" (and the linking Facebook page) and it lists a number of facts about pink bathrooms.

Did you know that the First Lady Mamie Eisenhower was pivotal in popularizing the colour, which is often referred to as “Mamie Pink” or “First Lady Pink.” Her husband President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent her pink flowers every morning. She re-decorated the private quarters in the White House in pink — so much so that reporters called it the “Pink Palace.” And, the bathroom in her Gettysburg retirement home was pink down to the cotton balls. As a result of all this pink-think, there was probably no question that American women (and marketers) would pick up on it. It also was a color trend right in line with the exuberance of the time — and even supportive of the return of women to the home after WWII and their complete remaking of the American domestic landscape.

Another fact I learnt was that pink is actually a great colour for bathrooms, because the reflected glow makes you look younger…healthier. Interesting!!

Of course pink doesn't need to be the only colour in the bathroom — how about this combination I came across in Pinterest. I have to admit I really like it. I could imagine this in my bathroom and it would be so pretty and delicate.

Of course, pink doesn't need to dominate the bathroom, the one above is quite nice with only pink paint with the remaining features white. Or, one could go for pink wallpaper like the example below — now, that is bold and daring!!

What colour is your bathroom? If you could change it's colour, what would you change it too?

  1. This makes me really happy! I love pink and would love to have a pink bathroom. My husband is quite tolerant of me and my love for pink things, but we had a laugh together when we were married: we received tons of bath towels as shower gifts, but not a single one was pink! Ha! Our bathroom now is blue, but I could easily be talked into jumping on this vintage trend!

    1. You could gradually move towards the pink as your blue towels wear out!!

  2. I love it too!
But it depends on the shade and huge of the pink.
Love the pink and light green!

    1. I wouldn't want a very bright pink bathroom, not very relaxing or calm first thing in the morning!!! But I do love the pink and green - just wonder where I can use it in my house!!

  3. I would love to have a pink 1950s style kitchen. Or maybe a blue kitchen? I'm not sure, but I know I'd love a pastel retro kitchen. But my husband wouldn't! :)

    1. I must do a post on the pink kitchen, I didn't realise it was so popular in the 1950s. I do love all the retro containers you can buy for the kitchen these days in those pastels - sadly, my kitchen isn't suited to the pastels at all!!

  4. A hint of pink, maybe. Something that can be changed easily. I liked the one with the towels and vase. I've never been a fan of pink.

  5. Pink is my favorite color, but I don't think I could stand a bathroom that was "pinked out" in my own house. The one with the pink painted walls and everything else in white with black fixtures is nice. I like pink and green together, but I'm not keen on pink tile. I think it has something to do with a nasty pink bathroom I have memories of from my childhood. :-P The last one is really not great. :-/ I dislike large prints in small rooms.

I might paint a sewing and crafting room with light pink. My mom and I had one that was a nice cheerful pale lime green. We realized after it was painted that it made us look quite sick, which wasn't good when trying on clothing projects or "auditioning" fabrics for clothing. It was a bad idea! :-) I wouldn't use yellow either - same problem.

    1. I agree that there are nasty pinks (that you often find in hospitals) and pretty pinks and its important to get it right!!

When we moved into our current home all the walls were pink but they were a dirty pink and certainly not very warm and inviting. The previous owner had also burnt a lot of candles and the walls had the residue from the smoke and the wax from the candles which made it looks worse. We removed the pink paint quite quickly!!

  6. I saw a pink kitchen on Pinterest once and almost jumped out of my seat! Unfortunately, my parents aren't too keen on having any pink rooms other than my bedroom lol. Thanks for sharing!

  7. Hi darling, I have a pink bathroom, in Victorian style, I've always thought this to be the most suitable colour for this room, its walls are of a shade of peach, maybe apricot ... ancient rose we could say ... probably you'd like it :)

Have a blessed weekend and thank you for this beautiful and interesting post, my sweetest friend

    1. I do love that Victorian style rather than the 1950s looks! Thankyou so much, yes, I will have a nice weekend (hoping to get some sewing in) and you have a lovely one too.

  8. You always have the most variety of subjects Jo. I love my visits here. The base of our bathroom is white but many accents are pink like a vase of roses, jars with antique flower images on them, and a nice, large painting of roses... Thank you for sharing your lovely posts on the Art of Home-Making Mondays each week!

  9. That's pretty much most of the bathrooms in the 50's and my Mom's bathroom is still pink with the pink tiles. It looks so old fashioned, doesn't it? Visiting from Hope in Every Season blog. Linda @Crafts a la mode

  10. We moved from our first home about ten years ago. The new home is much more updated. But the last house had a pink bathroom with wine colored tiles with a black border. I loved it. Sink, stool and tub were all pink.

    1. Your previous bathroom sounds lovely - I do like the idea of pink with something else :) But I can't imagine my husband ever wanting a pink bathroom so I will enjoy hearing about other peoples bathrooms.

  11. No. I'm not a pink bathroom girl. I think some of those pictures you included are pretty, but I personally like something a bit more all-purpose. I chose yellow, blue and white for our main bathroom (and I love how bright and cheerful it is!), and I chose red and brown and white for the ensuite because I love that colour combination and to me it is a romantic colour combination! :D Everyone is different! To me, pink bathrooms remind me of older or elderly people - that's my perception!!

    1. I quite liked the modern spin of the pink bathroom but I am not fond of the original pink bathroom. i also think its a bit unfair on men, who also have to use the space - its all a bit too girly for them so choosing colours that suit both is probably best.
