Happy Birthday dad

 Happy birthday dad

Each week I phone my dad (as I live in another state to my parents) and we have a long chat about: the weather, my garden, how my vegetables are growing (and he always gives me some tips on what I should be doing next), the family and the state of the economy!  Sometimes we talk so long that my mother tells us to get off the phone as it is getting late.

My dad cooks all the meals, washes the clothes, keeps the house clean and tidy, does the grocery shopping - he is my mums full time carer and he does a BRILLIANT job.  Like most carers, they are unsung heroes. They keep loved ones out of nursing homes and save the government billions.  My dad use to be a farmer, now he runs the home and he does a very good job.

This is why it is so important for all boys to be taught the skills of running a home as one never knows when they will need to use them.  And when boys become men, they need to keep up these skills so they don't go rusty.  I am a strong believer of men helping around the home - my DH loves to vacuum so I let him.  If anything happened to me, I know my family could run my home very well.

Happy birthday dad . . . do take a little rest today.

  1. Happy birthday to him!

I agree that home carers are unsung heroes... Sadly most people can't be bothered, they just dump their relatives in a home of some kind and do their duty visiting. I don't ever want to be put into a nursing home. I admire your dad for what he is doing in being a carer. It must be very hard work.

  2. Lovely pics Jo. So in agreement that boys need to know how even if they don't need to.

  3. Pictures like that make me quite home sick -- it was just yesterday, wasn't it? I think I'll give him a call.

  4. Nick, 1975 was a long time ago for me!! I was quite young. So much has happened since then, things we would never have dreamed of happening.

  5. That's one way to look at it. My dh would agree. He actually taught me to cook.

Growing up my dad baked us cookies so now when I bake I remember my dad. :)

  7. I love that your mother is wearing hats in both of those photos. Can I ask when they were married? I'd guess late 1950s or early 1960s, from the fashion? I could be way off, though....

  8. Val - my mum has always worn hats on Sunday mornings, she also wears then to weddings and funerals and never worried if no one else did.

My parents were married in 1958 (November). Her dress was plum coloured and quite heavy. When I was young I use to wear it - before vintage became trendy. I am not sure what has happened to it since.
