Art Friday: All about dogs

Painting by the Australian artist Mervyn Napier Waller of his  artist wife, Christian (1894–1954) seated on the ground, in the company of her Airedale terriers.  Waller designed the large stain glass windows and mosaic in the "Hall of Memory" at the National War Memorial in Canberra.

This week is all about dogs . . . big dogs, small dogs, cute dogs, bad dogs, cuddly dogs.  As the owner of two large dobermans and having grown up with dogs, I am a big fan of these lovable, loyal four-legged friends that have become mans-best-friend.  The artists that I have selected range from the famous to the not so famous, but they are all paintings that I like.  Please enjoy.

  1. Here's a message from Danny:
"I really like those puppy pictures! Thank you for doing that for me! My favourite one is 'Boyhood Dreams'. Love from Danny."

Dolly says, "I like doggies too, but they are not my favouritest animal. My favourite one here is 'A Shepherdess' because of the girl - the girl is dressed nice and that's my favourite part about it. Love from Dolly."

It was a winner, Jo! Danny was delighted!! :)

  2. Dear Danny, I am so glad you liked these dogs, some of these are very sweet and cuddly. My favourites are the dogs lying in bed as my dog Gaia loves to lie on the bed with his head on the pillow. If you tell me what else you like I will try and find art that you might like.

Dear Dolly, the Shepherdess is a lovely painting, painted over 100 years ago. What would your favourite topics so I can look for some special art just for you?

    Love from Cousin Jo xxx

  7. I really enjoyed these paintings and pictures! I love dogs, they are in my family from oblivious times. Now, I have sweet and lovely dog - mix of Saint Bernard and Polish Tatra Sheepdog. She is very cut and wise.

  8. Okay, I must confess that I am not a big "dog lover," though I did own a dog once during my teenage years.

That being said, I did enjoy the dog paintings. You certainly chose a good selection for our viewing. My favorite painting was "Night Light." I just though it was too cute - a girl and her puppy reading a book together in bed. :)
