Queensland floods

 Brisbane River

To my family in Brisbane who are being directly or indirectly affected by the floods, you are in my prayers at this very difficult time.  One cousin and her family have moved most of their belongings out of their home and now wait to see what happens.   Their street started to flood yesterday.

The Queensland floods is of the magnitude we have never seen before, with 12 dead from recent torrents and 51 missing, it will be frightening days ahead for so many families.  I am sure most Australians, like myself, are struggling with the immense size of this flood and its destructive power, at present it covers the size of France and Germany and I am sure that is growing by the day.

We leave this crisis in the Lords hands and trust that He will protect our loved ones.

I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalm 91:2

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD,made heaven and which earth. Psalm 121:1-2

Roselie Village, Brisbane

And to those families on the other side of Australia in the state of Western Australia who have lost their homes due to bush fires.  Don't forget them either.

Dorothea Mackellar was so right when she penned the poem "My Country" - Australia is most certainly a land of "droughts and flooding rains".

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!
Mile after mile of water
Even though this is such a tragedy, these floods are filling up our river systems and dams as never before - after years and years of drought this is a absolute blessing.

  1. Amen, Jo. It is scary for those people, and yet having rain in so many previously drought-ridden areas is such a blessing.
By the way, I really like the words of that song! I reckon it should be our national anthem.

  2. Absolutely overwhelming and devastating....
    But God....
We leave all these things in His capable hands!

  3. Praying you and yours are kept safe!

  4. I've certainly not seen anything like this for all the time I've lived in Australia! Praying....

  5. I've certainly not seen anything like this for all the time I've lived in Australia! I didn't realise you had family up there. Will be adding them to my prayers....

  6. Prayers with you...my son keeps telling me about it...he has a friend and his wife that were there with YWAM for six months..so they keep up with what is going on...prayers for Australia!

  7. Jo, it is a blessing too. Flushing the river systems of salt & algae buld up that were becoming a real problem. Brissie [my favourite all time city lol] is nuts for building on the river flats. What did they think would happen? Dealt with it in 74. Guess we'll deal with it this time too. Wonder what the pollies will come up with now the Wivenhoe option has failed? Jo, I hope all your family is safe. We have friends at Kangaroo Point ~ which went under early.

  8. It's tragic. I have relatives up there and just hope they are ok.
It's hard to imagine how much water has inundated such a vast area.
As you say Jo..we need to pray and trust God!

  9. News just through from my cousin - only the ground level got flood, the living areas are all fine. However many houses in the suburb are under water.

  10. We've been hearing a fair bit about the floods in the states, and every time I hear a report, I think of all of you that I've met who live in Australia. Your family will be in my prayers.

  11. Queensland is very much in my prayers, here in England we have seen lots of scenes of devastation and terror. I have a friend living in Mount Ommaney and I havent heard from her since Tuesday, wondering how things are in that area, if anyone knows. God Bless - Nita

  12. Nita - the power may still be turned off in particular if the suburb is still flooded. It looks a little in from the river, so may be ok.
