  • 12 million Australians are associated with pets.
  • 63% of the 7.5 million households in Australia own pets.
  • Australia has one of the highest incidence of pet ownership in the world.
  • Typically, the major carer of the pet is female, married with children, living in the suburbs and most likely employed.
  • 91% of pet owners report feeling 'very close' to their pet, reinforcing that pets are an integral member of the family unit, however constituted.
  • Pets were a normal part of childhood for more than 83% of Australians.
  • Of the Australians who do not currently own a pet, 53% would like to do so in the future.
  • The pet care industry contributes $4.74 billion to the economy annually. 
  • In total 44,700 Australians are employed in the pet care industry.
And I am the proud owner of 2 Dobermans (Brenin and Gaia) and 2 cats - Charlie the Tortoiseshell and Ruby the Ragdoll. In the past I have owned, cats, dogs, rats, rabbits, mice and fish.    My favourite would have to be cats.  What is your favourite pet?

      I wonder how accurate that really is considering
    how fast fish breed and how quickly owners kill them off!

      Jo: you know I'm a cat person through & through though in my time I have owned & loved dogs, fish, birds & rabbits. The most awful thing I have heard recently is how many familys are having to surrender their beloved pets due to the economic crisis & the huge hike in utilities & food costs because they can no longer afford to keep & care for them.

      WOW! That's a lot of pets... and a LOT of fish!

      I wonder if chickens count as birds? We would like to have a pet dog and possibly a pet cat (Dan and Dolly both would love a cat), but the owner of our rental won't allow us :(

      So many "trivial" facts about pets - you should be on Jeopardy!

      I have had pets all of my life - now we are the owners of kitties that we adore. When we travel we iss them so - talk about them all the time - it's just plain silly how we act about them!
