International Womens Day

I am not into International Women's Day - which, in case you didn't know is today, the 8th of March.  I tend to find the whole concept along the lines of "look at me, aren't I great", or as the Helen Reddy song says "I am woman, hear me roar".   It is a feminist concept and has been used for the last 100 year to push the feminist ideal.

But I thought I would use this day to remember our role as women and wives according to the scriptures and not as the world wants women to behave.

As wives
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. . . Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;   . . . So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Ephesians 5:22, 24-25, 28

Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober,
faithful in all things. 1 Timothy 3:11

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives. 1 Peter 3:1

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.   Titus 2:5

 As women
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.  Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach , nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
 1 Timothy 2:9-12

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30

As mothers
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober , to love their husbands, to love their children.  Titus 2:3-4

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old , he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

All our instructions as women are set out in the Bible, it could not be clearer . . . we do not need the world to tell us how to live as women.  God has already done this.

  5. Those Scriptures are excellent reminders - and you are right, God already set it all down for us, we have no need to go around changing His commands and standards - He knows best.

  7. I feel as though you are somewhat missing the point. Abuse of women is as rampant as ever, and I often feel that Christians brush it aside saying that women try to be too much, and it's not how the Bible wants it. You say how women should submit to men, and women should dress a certain way, act a certain way, that it is up to the woman to not seduce the man.

Rape doesn't happen because of how I dress or how I act. Rape happens because someone refuses to listen to me, to what I say, and refuses to accept my no as a no. What you are doing is excusing other people's actions, blaming them on the woman, allowing such extreme cases to occur because you say it's how God wants it.

Being a woman does not mean that a man can talk down to, look down on or treat her as less than human. Ever. But that's what happens. International Woman's Day is about speaking out for the right's of women as human beings. Women who aren't allowed to say no, who aren't allowed to make their own decisions, who are abused, who are seen by men as less than human.

Feminism is not demanding that a woman be accepted as better than a man. It is not defying the roles put forth in the Bible. It is demanding some basic respect, appreciation, some basic human rights. What you are saying here is completely abusing that because you seem to think that it's more. You have no proper concept of what feminism really is, do you?

Your ability to have a job, to walk down the street as a woman, with short hair, to have knowledge, go to have gone to school. When men don't treat you like a piece of machinery designed for the explicit purpose of pleasing him, that is the day we are fighting for. Stop putting it down and appreciate it.

Here's a link for you. Just, you know, cos.
