Book giveaway

Dear friends,

A few weeks ago I ordered the book "Oranges and Sunshine" from the Book Depository in the UK.  However due to a poor memory, last weekend I was browsing in a secondhand bookstore and bought "Oranges and Sunshine".  Guess what - I now own two copies and I don't need two copies and I would like to give away the brand new book that arrived today.

Below is the Amazon description - it is a very sad book about the deportation of 1000s of children from Britain.   For those in Australia, this is a story you will be familiar with, but for those in the USA, you may have never heard of this tragic part of modern British/Australian history.

It is a a true story, but it would not be classified as Christian literature.

Please note: I am yet to read my copy, but from all that I have heard I believe that it is a suitable book. It may not be flattering towards the Catholic Church as their behaviour towards these young boys was unacceptable due to their treatment and sexual abuse that occurred in the institutions in Australia.

Book description (from Amazon.UK)

In 1986 Margaret Humphreys, a Nottingham social worker, investigated a woman’s claim that, aged four, she had been put on a boat to Australia by the British government. At first incredulous, Margaret discovered that this was just the tip of an enormous iceberg. Up to 150,000 children, some as young as three years old, had been deported from children’s homes in Britain and shipped off to a ‘new life’ in distant parts of the Empire, right up until as recently as 1970.

Many were told that their parents were dead, and parents often believed that their children had been adopted in Britain. In fact, for many children it was to be a life of horrendous physical and sexual abuse far away from everything they knew. Margaret reveals how she unravelled this shocking secret and how it became her mission to reunite these innocent and unwilling exiles with their families in Britain before it was too late.

Children being sent to Australia with a promise of a better life.

The movie was released this year and here is the youtube trailer: http://youtu.be/3CJxgk2ZrxY

  5. Goodness, no I've hever heard that story (I'm in the USA). How desperately sad. I never cease to be amazed at man's inhumanity to their fellow man.

  7. Yes, I know this history. The ABC has done several docos & mini~ series. The English have an apalling habit of doing this. At least the Aboriginals got to stay in their own country! I'm Scots descent so don't get me started. lol
