Art Friday: Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol, pop art and Campbell's soup cans

In 1962, 51 years ago, Warhol did his famous artwork "32 Campbell's Soup Cans" (below).   Have you ever wondered why he selected 32 cans of soup? This is the number of Campbell soup varieties available in 1962, many more than on today's supermarket shelves.

You might not like pop art, but it was revolutionary in the art world - new, brash and out there. It was very commercial and so different to other art at the time.

This year Campell's have brought out an anniversary collection of soup cans (tomato soup) and below is my Andy Warhol moment using three of these cans.  My son has suggested I keep these cans unopened and perhaps one they might become collect items!!

Does mine come anywhere close to Warhol!!!

  1. I had no idea there were 32 varieties back then - more than I would have thought!!!

    1. I can't imagine what they would have all been, probably pretty horrible combinations!! I am sure they only have a handful now.
