Parents growing older

How true.

We are often so busy looking after our own families that we forget that our parents are getting older and need our help. We need to reach out and care for our parents, even when its difficult (as it can be).  They have done so much for us, now it is our turn to help.

If they are living alone they also need someone just to talk to and a phone call can make all the differences. My dad and I chat for ages on the phone (we often fix the worlds problems all by ourselves) and I pray that these phone calls do cheer him up and do make a difference. He lived with mum for so many years and now he is on his own and that must be very lonely at times. This is our time to help our parents and even if you live a long way from your parents, as I do, there are little things you can do such as regular phone calls, letters and cards (always a nice surprise to receive a cheery letter), assist with buying books, clothes etc..

. . . . because one day we will be old and I very much hope that my children take care of me when I need it.

Listen to your father who begot you,
And do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:22 (NKJV)

  2. This is so true. We live in a very busy world, but we should try to always remember our parents (and elderly folk who don't have children, or whose children neglect them).

    1. Dad has commented on the number of elderly in the nursing home who never get visitors from anyone. Whilst some have dementia and don't have a clue, it's still very sad to think that some parents have children who don't care.

  3. Hello Joluise, I really wanted to comment on this post, as now both my parents have gone to be with the Lord. But we must remind those that still have their parents to show honor and to show love and attention. And you are right just a little note or a chat on the phone can solve the whole worlds problems :)
    Blessings, Roxy

    1. Hi Roxy, as I mentioned to Clara above, the number of elderly people in my mothers nursing home who don't get visitors is really sad. How can families just forget about their parents and neglect them like this. It's very sad but I think a growing problem. Some times people treat their pets better than their parents. It's doesn't take much to cheer someone else and make their day more joyful. My dad just loves to chat and its something I can do from a distances. I sent flowers to my mum on her birthday and she placed them in an open area of the nursing home so everyone could enjoy them. They lasted a week and lots of the ladies got pleasure from the them.

      Blessings

  4. Lovely post, Jo.
I am in your exact position except it is my Mum living alone and Dad has now passed away. Mum gets quite miserable, though she doesn't complain. She gets very excited when we phone it seems to soothe her. Since there are seven siblings and many grandchildren she is rather spoilt for visitors and calls. My mother also loves to chat and since she has all but lost her memory she can chat about the same things over and over....but that's okay :-) It is good to take time from our busy lives for these precious souls who brought us into this world and in most cases have seen us through all our trials. I so want to be like my Mum when I grow up! xx

    1. My mum is in a nursing home in high care which makes it hard for dad as he also visits her every day then come home to do all his chores. A phone can make so much differences to those in their older years - it just says "someone cares" and I know how important that feels. '
I want to be just like my dad when I grew old (and up) and I think I have many of his traits all ready. perhaps this is why we get along so well. I am off to visit in November and really looking forward to it.

      xx
